Speaking about Islam without knowledge is dangerous.

Islam is divinely revealed by Allah, it is the straight path and leads to Paradise. Islam came to benefit mankind. Therefore as Muslims, we must beware of speaking about the religion without knowledge.

Allah has warned us about this in the Qur’an. He has condemned it.
وَلَا تَقْفُ مَا لَيْسَ لَكَ بِهِۦ عِلْمٌۚ إِنَّ ٱلسَّمْعَ وَٱلْبَصَرَ وَٱلْفُؤَادَ كُلُّ أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ كَانَ عَنْهُ مَسْـُٔولًا

And do not pursue that of which you have no knowledge. Indeed, the hearing, the sight and the heart – about all those [one] will be questioned.
Al-Isra’ 17:36

بَلِ ٱتَّبَعَ ٱلَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوٓا۟ أَهْوَآءَهُم بِغَيْرِ عِلْمٍۖ فَمَن يَهْدِى مَنْ أَضَلَّ ٱللَّهُۖ وَمَا لَهُم مِّن نَّٰصِرِينَ

But those who wrong follow their [own] desires without knowledge. Then who can guide one whom Allah has sent astray? And for them there are no helpers.
Ar-Rum 30:29

وَمِنَ ٱلنَّاسِ مَن يُجَٰدِلُ فِى ٱللَّهِ بِغَيْرِ عِلْمٍ وَيَتَّبِعُ كُلَّ شَيْطَٰنٍ مَّرِيدٍ

And of the people is he who disputes about Allah without knowledge and follows every rebellious devil.
Al-Hajj 22:3

Allah warns against associating partners with Him.

Al-An’am 6:100

وَجَعَلُوا۟ لِلَّهِ شُرَكَآءَ ٱلْجِنَّ وَخَلَقَهُمْۖ وَخَرَقُوا۟ لَهُۥ بَنِينَ وَبَنَٰتٍۭ بِغَيْرِ عِلْمٍۚ سُبْحَٰنَهُۥ وَتَعَٰلَىٰ عَمَّا يَصِفُونَ

But they have attributed to Allah partners – the jinn, while He has created them – and have fabricated for Him sons and daughters without knowledge. Exalted is He and high above what they describe.

Speaking about Allah without knowledge is indeed telling lies against Him, and there are no lies worse than that.

This goes the same for speaking about the Prophet peace be upon him. We must never fabricate anything against him. He has told us:

Whoever tells a lie against me intentionally, then (surely) let him occupy his seat in Hell-fire.” (Sahih Bukhari 108).

Unfortunately, many Muslims take this lightly. They try to haste to make their own fatwas and have the bizarre and weird interpretations of the Qur’an and Sunnah as if they are scholars.

If a patient were to take medical advice from someone who is not a qualified doctor, it will only be fatal to their health, likewise, those who listen to people who are not qualified in Islamic science and take their fatwas will only destroy their Imaan.

Privacy in Islam

Privacy in Islam.

Nowadays asking for permission is a basic manner but it is not practiced by people here in Pakistan. Rather than ringing alarms or knocking on doors, they simply enter. This is very unIslamic behavior. We must respect everyone’s privacy, there are also sunnah practices which are mentioned below.

Allah has enjoined us to ask for permission as mentioned in Qur’an. We also have to train our children to follow the basic manner.

يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ لِيَسْتَـْٔذِنكُمُ ٱلَّذِينَ مَلَكَتْ أَيْمَٰنُكُمْ وَٱلَّذِينَ لَمْ يَبْلُغُوا۟ ٱلْحُلُمَ مِنكُمْ ثَلَٰثَ مَرَّٰتٍۚ مِّن قَبْلِ صَلَوٰةِ ٱلْفَجْرِ وَحِينَ تَضَعُونَ ثِيَابَكُم مِّنَ ٱلظَّهِيرَةِ وَمِنۢ بَعْدِ صَلَوٰةِ ٱلْعِشَآءِۚ ثَلَٰثُ عَوْرَٰتٍ لَّكُمْۚ لَيْسَ عَلَيْكُمْ وَلَا عَلَيْهِمْ جُنَاحٌۢ بَعْدَهُنَّۚ طَوَّٰفُونَ عَلَيْكُم بَعْضُكُمْ عَلَىٰ بَعْضٍۚ كَذَٰلِكَ يُبَيِّنُ ٱللَّهُ لَكُمُ ٱلْءَايَٰتِۗ وَٱللَّهُ عَلِيمٌ حَكِيمٌ

O you who have believed, let those whom your right hands possess and those who have not [yet] reached puberty among you ask permission of you [before entering] at three times: before the dawn prayer and when you put aside your clothing [for rest] at noon and after the night prayer. [These are] three times of privacy for you. There is no blame upon you nor upon them beyond these [periods], for they continually circulate among you – some of you, among others. Thus does Allah make clear to you the verses [i.e., His ordinances]; and Allah is Knowing and Wise.

An-Nur 24:58

وَإِذَا بَلَغَ ٱلْأَطْفَٰلُ مِنكُمُ ٱلْحُلُمَ فَلْيَسْتَـْٔذِنُوا۟ كَمَا ٱسْتَـْٔذَنَ ٱلَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِهِمْۚ كَذَٰلِكَ يُبَيِّنُ ٱللَّهُ لَكُمْ ءَايَٰتِهِۦۗ وَٱللَّهُ عَلِيمٌ حَكِيمٌ

And when the children among you reach puberty, let them ask permission [at all times] as those before them have done. Thus does Allah make clear to you His verses; and Allah is Knowing and Wise.

An-Nur 24:59

فَإِن لَّمْ تَجِدُوا۟ فِيهَآ أَحَدًا فَلَا تَدْخُلُوهَا حَتَّىٰ يُؤْذَنَ لَكُمْۖ وَإِن قِيلَ لَكُمُ ٱرْجِعُوا۟ فَٱرْجِعُوا۟ۖ هُوَ أَزْكَىٰ لَكُمْۚ وَٱللَّهُ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ عَلِيمٌ

And if you do not find anyone therein, do not enter them until permission has been given you. And if it is said to you, “Go back,” then go back; it is purer for you. And Allah is Knowing of what you do.

An-Nur 24:28

This shows how great is Muslim’s rights over his brother when it comes to privacy. There are ahadith which we should practice.

Abdullah ibn ‘Umar said, “When someone enters a house which is not lived in, he should say, ‘Peace be upon the righteous slaves of Allah.'”

Al Adab Al Mufrad 1055

Ibn ‘Umar reported that when his children had reached puberty and he had withdrawn to his room, none of them entered where he was except with his permission.

Al Adab al Mufrad 1058

We also have to ask our close family, whether it be our parents or siblings.

Alqama said, “A man came to ‘Abdullah and said, ‘Should I ask permission to go in where my mother is?’ He said, ‘At all times. Do you want to see her (exposed)?'”

Al Adab Al Mufrad 1059

Jabir said, “A man should ask permission from his son and his mother, even if she is old, his brother, his sister, and his father.”

Al Adab al Mufrad 1062

We should say greeting

Abu Hurayra said, “When someone comes in and does not say, ‘Peace be upon you,’ then say, ‘No,’ until he brings the key which is the greeting (salam).”

Al Adab al Mufrad 1067

Prophet peace be upon him gave us stern warning of violating the privacy.

Abu Hurayra reported that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, “If a man looks into your house and you take some pebbles and gouge out his eye, there is no fault in you.”

Al Adab al Mufrad 1068

Anas said, “The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, was standing in prayer and a man looked into his room. He took an arrow from his quiver and aimed it at his eyes.”

Al Adab al Mufrad 1069

We can only ask for permission 3 times, if it exceeds that we should leave them alone.

Ubayd ibn Hunayn related to him that Abu Musa said, “I asked permission three times to come in to ‘Umar, but he did not give me permission and so I went away. He said, ”Abdullah, is it hard on you to be kept waiting at your door.’ I said, ‘I asked permission from you three times and you did not give me permission, so I went away (and we were commanded to do that).’

Al Adab al Mufrad 1073. (This hadith is lengthy)

If we are given an invitation it is permission.

Abu Hurayra reported that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, “When one of you gives someone an invitation and the person you invited comes with your messenger, that is his permission to enter.”

Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 1075

We must also look away and not look at the door directly so that we don’t look at prohibited things.

Abdullah ibn Busr, the Companion of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said that when the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, came to a door when he wanted to ask permission to enter, he did not face it directly. He stood to the right or the left. If he was given permission, he went in. Otherwise he went away.

Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 1078

It is not good to simply say “Me” when you are being asked about your idenifty

I came to the Prophet (ﷺ) in order to consult him regarding my father’s debt. When I knocked on the door, he asked, “Who is that?” I replied, “I” He said, “I, I?” He repeated it as if he disliked it.

In modern times, there have been many issues that arose, ever since the pre-colonialism era, many Muslims have fallen into ignorance and immorality. One such issue is the free mixing with the opposite gender and the negligence of the hijab. Friendship with the opposite gender has become common, wherever it may be in, such as educational institutions, free mixed workplaces, and even unfortunately among relatives, especially the cousins.

Islam is the religion of honor and modesty. Shariah is meant to benefit mankind, and it blocks all paths that lead to unlawful and harmful things.

There is no doubt that Allah has created desires in both men and women to continue the population of mankind until the Day of Judgment. Islam has laid out the guidance when it comes to the communication and being in presence of the opposite gender with some points below:

Firstly we are ordered to lower our gaze down away. Allah says in the Surah An-Nur 30 verse:

قُل لِّلْمُؤْمِنِينَ يَغُضُّوا۟ مِنْ أَبْصَـٰرِهِمْ وَيَحْفَظُوا۟ فُرُوجَهُمْ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ أَزْكَىٰ لَهُمْ ۗ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ خَبِيرٌۢ بِمَا يَصْنَعُونَ

˹O Prophet!˺ Tell the believing men to lower their gaze and guard their chastity. That is purer for them. Surely Allah is All-Aware of what they do.

He also has ordered the believing women to lower their gaze down and that they must not show off their adornments in front of non-mahram men (in the next verse after above).

Women are ordered to wear outer clothes that cover their whole bodies hence the hijab has been legislated.

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلنَّبِىُّ قُل لِّأَزْوَٰجِكَ وَبَنَاتِكَ وَنِسَآءِ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ يُدْنِينَ عَلَيْهِنَّ مِن جَلَـٰبِيبِهِنَّ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ أَدْنَىٰٓ أَن يُعْرَفْنَ فَلَا يُؤْذَيْنَ ۗ وَكَانَ ٱللَّهُ غَفُورًا رَّحِيمًا

O Prophet! Ask your wives, daughters, and believing women to draw their cloaks over their bodies. In this way it is more likely that they will be recognized ˹as virtuous˺ and not be harassed. And Allah is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.1  (Surah Ahzab:59)

Allah also orders women to not speak softly before men.

يَـٰنِسَآءَ ٱلنَّبِىِّ لَسْتُنَّ كَأَحَدٍ مِّنَ ٱلنِّسَآءِ ۚ إِنِ ٱتَّقَيْتُنَّ فَلَا تَخْضَعْنَ بِٱلْقَوْلِ فَيَطْمَعَ ٱلَّذِى فِى قَلْبِهِۦ مَرَضٌ وَقُلْنَ قَوْلًا مَّعْرُوفًا

O wives of the Prophet, you are not like anyone among women. If you fear Allāh, then do not be soft in speech [to men],1 lest he in whose heart is disease should covet, but speak with appropriate speech. (Surah Ahzab:32)

Even though this verse ordered the wives of the Prophet peace be upon him directly, it also applies to all other women too.

Allah says:

Wed them with the permission of their own folk and give them their mahr (dowry) according to what is reasonable; they should be chaste, not adulterous, nor taking boyfriends…” [al-Nisa 4:25]

If having boyfriends/girlfriends is forbidden then becoming friends with the opposite gender is also forbidden..

Friendship with the opposite gender is full of evils, even if it is seen as “innocent” it leads to diseases in the hearts. We see that so-called “friends” often speak with each other casually and softly, they joke with each other and go outside to enjoy somewhere and take selfies, all of this is evil. No one who is concerned about their honors would do such foolish actions. Prophet peace be upon him told us that a man and woman without her guardian are not alone but Shaytan is the third of them. Those who say that they can resist themselves and are strong, this is a sign of their arrogance and ego which will only lead them to their doom and regrets. We should never disobey Allah and His Messenger.

Even if the friendship does not lead to unlawful sexual intercourse, it is not only about that but even the ears, tongue, eyes, and private part.

Narrated Ibn `Abbas:

I did not see anything so resembling minor sins as what Abu Huraira said from the Prophet, who said, “Allah has written for the son of Adam his inevitable share of adultery whether he is aware of it or not: The adultery of the eye is the looking (at something which is sinful to look at), and the adultery of the tongue is to utter (what it is unlawful to utter), and the inner self wishes and longs for (adultery) and the private parts turn that into reality or refrain from submitting to the temptation.”

Sahih al-Bukhari 6612

Prophet peace be upon him also said:

For one of you to be struck in the head with an iron needle is better for him than to touch a woman who is not permissible for him.” Narrated by at-Tabaraani; classed as Saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Jaami‘ (5045).

How could then some of the men go ahead and enjoy with the non-mahram women who are daughters, sisters, wives, and mothers on grounds of “friendship”?

May Allah grant blessing and peace to Prophet Muhammad, his family, his companions, and those who came after them. Peace be upon those who seek the Truth.

This article is about Fasting. In Arabic, it is Sawm صَوْم‎. This article will cover matters related to fastings, such as Ramadan and other obligatory fasting, voluntary fasting, what breaks the fast, what Muslims should do and do not during fasting, forbidden and disliked time to fast in, and lastly virtue of fasting.

Fasting and its meaning:

The Arabic word “Sawm” means “to abstain away from something”. An example is that if a person vowed to not talk to anyone for a day or more than that, then this is sawm. The Quran says regarding Hazrat Maryam

فَكُلِى وَٱشْرَبِى وَقَرِّى عَيْنًا ۖ فَإِمَّا تَرَيِنَّ مِنَ ٱلْبَشَرِ أَحَدًا فَقُولِىٓ إِنِّى نَذَرْتُ لِلرَّحْمَـٰنِ صَوْمًا فَلَنْ أُكَلِّمَ ٱلْيَوْمَ إِنسِيًّا

Surah Maryam (26th verse)

So eat and drink and be contented. And if you see from among humanity anyone, say, ‘Indeed, I have vowed to the Most Merciful abstention, so I will not speak today to [any] man.'”

Saheeh International

The basic principle of fasting is that one should abstain from food and drink, having marital relation with spouse, when the true dawn has started until the sun has set, but there are much that must be avoided, such as speaking foul words, fighting with each other, and unnessecary arguements.

When was fasting legistated?

It was legistated when Prophet peace be upon him and his early followers made Hijrah to Madinah. Originally it was not Ramadan, which was revealed year later, but Ashura, as reported in ahadith:

حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَشَّارٍ، حَدَّثَنَا غُنْدَرٌ، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ، عَنْ أَبِي بِشْرٍ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، قَالَ قَدِمَ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم الْمَدِينَةَ وَالْيَهُودُ تَصُومُ عَاشُورَاءَ فَقَالُوا هَذَا يَوْمٌ ظَهَرَ فِيهِ مُوسَى عَلَى فِرْعَوْنَ‏.‏ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم لأَصْحَابِهِ ‏ “‏ أَنْتُمْ أَحَقُّ بِمُوسَى مِنْهُمْ، فَصُومُوا ‏”‏‏.‏

Narrated Ibn `Abbas:

When the Prophet (ﷺ) arrived at Medina, the Jews were observing the fast on ‘Ashura’ (10th of Muharram) and they said, “This is the day when Moses became victorious over Pharaoh,” On that, the Prophet (ﷺ) said to his companions, “You (Muslims) have more right to celebrate Moses’ victory than they have, so observe the fast on this day.”

Sahih al-Bukhari 4680

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الْيَمَانِ، أَخْبَرَنَا شُعَيْبٌ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ، قَالَ أَخْبَرَنِي عُرْوَةُ بْنُ الزُّبَيْرِ، أَنَّ عَائِشَةَ ـ رضى الله عنها ـ قَالَتْ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم أَمَرَ بِصِيَامِ يَوْمِ عَاشُورَاءَ، فَلَمَّا فُرِضَ رَمَضَانُ كَانَ مَنْ شَاءَ صَامَ، وَمَنْ شَاءَ أَفْطَرَ‏.‏

Narrated `Aisha:

Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) ordered (the Muslims) to fast on the day of ‘Ashura’, and when fasting in the month of Ramadan was prescribed, it became optional for one to fast on that day (‘Ashura’) or not.

Why did Allah legistate fasting?

Allah tells us in the Quran (Surah Baqarah: 184)

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ كُتِبَ عَلَيْكُمُ ٱلصِّيَامُ كَمَا كُتِبَ عَلَى ٱلَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِكُمْ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَتَّقُونَ

  O you who believe! Observing As-Saum (the fasting) is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, that you may become Al-Muttaqûn (the pious)

The purpose of fasting is to attain the piety as mentioned in the verse. One should understand that it is not about abstaining from eating and drinking, and marital relation merely, but that they should try to do more good deeds such as speaking good words, helping the poor and orphans by donating to them as sadqa, being patient, and nafl prayers, while also abstaining from all sins, such as speaking foul words, fighting with each other, and arguing unnesscarily etc. if these are not done by the fasting person, then he would face nothing but hunger and thirst, earning no goodness, Prophet peace be upon him told us:

حَدَّثَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ رَافِعٍ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ الْمُبَارَكِ، عَنْ أُسَامَةَ بْنِ زَيْدٍ، عَنْ سَعِيدٍ الْمَقْبُرِيِّ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ ‏ “‏ رُبَّ صَائِمٍ لَيْسَ لَهُ مِنْ صِيَامِهِ إِلاَّ الْجُوعُ. وَرُبَّ قَائِمٍ لَيْسَ لَهُ مِنْ قِيَامِهِ إِلاَّ السَّهَرُ ‏”‏ ‏.‏

“There are people who fast and get nothing from their fast except hunger, and there are those who pray and get nothing from their prayer but a sleepless night.”

The word “Ramadan” is derived from “Ramidha” / “Ar Ramad” it means intense scorching heat. The word “Ramdha” means sun baked sand. As the sun evarporates water from the ground, likewise Ramadan also burns our sins and help us to be better Muslims if we take actions and follow Allah’s commands. Fasting in Ramadan is one of the pillar of Islam,

When does it become obligatory?

Fasting in the month of Ramadan becomes obligatory for all those who are Muslims, adult and sound mind, able to fast, and settled (not travelling), and there is no impediment, such as if one is suffering from an illness which could worsen if fasting, as advised by a trustworthy Muslim doctor, and the menstruation and bleeding following childbirth in case of women.

The person must be Muslim. Kafirs are not eligible, they are not required to fast, and if they revert to Islam, they do not have to make up the fasts.

The Muslim must also be adult in order for Ramadan to be obligatory. For the male, the sign of puburty starts when any of these signs occur:

  1. Wet dreams
  2. Pubic hair growth
  3. Reaching 15 years old.

In case of female, she also has 4th sign: starting of menstruction.

When any of these sign occurs, he / she becomes accountable for all of their deeds.

It is not obligatory on children, but in fact, this is recommended, yet unfortunately abandoned. Many parents due to their ignorance would feel pitful if their children wish to fast Ramadan. Rather than discouraging them, they should be encouraged, as reported in ahadith:

وَحَدَّثَنِي أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ نَافِعٍ الْعَبْدِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا بِشْرُ بْنُ الْمُفَضَّلِ بْنِ لاَحِقٍ، حَدَّثَنَا خَالِدُ، بْنُ ذَكْوَانَ عَنِ الرُّبَيِّعِ بِنْتِ مُعَوِّذِ بْنِ عَفْرَاءَ، قَالَتْ أَرْسَلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم غَدَاةَ عَاشُورَاءَ إِلَى قُرَى الأَنْصَارِ الَّتِي حَوْلَ الْمَدِينَةِ ‏ “‏ مَنْ كَانَ أَصْبَحَ صَائِمًا فَلْيُتِمَّ صَوْمَهُ وَمَنْ كَانَ أَصْبَحَ مُفْطِرًا فَلْيُتِمَّ بَقِيَّةَ يَوْمِهِ ‏”‏ ‏.‏ فَكُنَّا بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ نَصُومُهُ وَنُصَوِّمُ صِبْيَانَنَا الصِّغَارَ مِنْهُمْ إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ وَنَذْهَبُ إِلَى الْمَسْجِدِ فَنَجْعَلُ لَهُمُ اللُّعْبَةَ مِنَ الْعِهْنِ فَإِذَا بَكَى أَحَدُهُمْ عَلَى الطَّعَامِ أَعْطَيْنَاهَا إِيَّاهُ عِنْدَ الإِفْطَارِ ‏.‏

Rubayyi’ daughter of Mu’awwidh b. ‘Afra’ said that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) sent (a person) on the morning of Ashura to the villages of Ansar around Medina (with this message): He who got up in the morning fasting (without eating anything) he should complete his fast, and he who had had his breakfast in the morning, he should complete the rest of the day (without food). The Companions said; We henceforth observed fast on it (on the day of ‘Ashura) and, God willing, made our children observe that. We went to the mosque and made toys out of wool for them and when anyone felt hungry and wept for the food we gave them these toys till it was time to break the fast.

Sahih Muslim 1136a

The Muslim must also be sane. Insane people are exempted from fasting.

Any person who is suffering from chronic illness which can not be cured, and have lost hope. should give kaffara for each days he has missed, but if he is not suffering from it, and is suffering from diseases that can be cured in sha Allah, then when he becomes healthy, he must make up the fasting.

The starting of Ramadan:

At the end of the Shaban. The moon must be sighted, and if it is too cloudy, then it should be calcutated, as per hadith.

حَدَّثَنَا آدَمُ، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ، حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ زِيَادٍ، قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ ـ رضى الله عنه ـ يَقُولُ قَالَ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم أَوْ قَالَ قَالَ أَبُو الْقَاسِمِ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏ “‏ صُومُوا لِرُؤْيَتِهِ، وَأَفْطِرُوا لِرُؤْيَتِهِ، فَإِنْ غُبِّيَ عَلَيْكُمْ فَأَكْمِلُوا عِدَّةَ شَعْبَانَ ثَلاَثِينَ ‏”‏‏.‏

Narrated Abu Huraira:

The Prophet (ﷺ) or Abul-Qasim said, “Start fasting on seeing the crescent (of Ramadan), and give up fasting on seeing the crescent (of Shawwal), and if the sky is overcast (and you cannot see it), complete thirty days of Sha’ban.”

The person must also then make the intention to start fast before dawn starts.

أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ حَاتِمٍ، قَالَ أَنْبَأَنَا حِبَّانُ، قَالَ أَنْبَأَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ، عَنْ سُفْيَانَ بْنِ عُيَيْنَةَ، وَمَعْمَرٍ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ، عَنْ حَمْزَةَ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ حَفْصَةَ، قَالَتْ لاَ صِيَامَ لِمَنْ لَمْ يُجْمِعِ الصِّيَامَ قَبْلَ الْفَجْرِ ‏.‏

It was narrated that Hafsah that: “There is no fast for the one who does not intend to fast before dawn.”

Sunan an-Nasa’i 2338

It is highly recommended to eat suhoor:

حَدَّثَنَا آدَمُ بْنُ أَبِي إِيَاسٍ، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْعَزِيزِ بْنُ صُهَيْبٍ، قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَنَسَ بْنَ مَالِكٍ ـ رضى الله عنه ـ قَالَ قَالَ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏ “‏ تَسَحَّرُوا فَإِنَّ فِي السَّحُورِ بَرَكَةً ‏”‏‏.

Narrated Anas bin Malik:

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Take Suhur as there is a blessing in it.”

Sahih al-Bukhari 1923‏

Suhur is eaten before the true dawn appears. The reason why it is legislated is that it helps the fasting person to get more energy to go through until sunset, secondly, there is a blessing in it, and thirdly it is to be different from Jews and Christians, as reported in hadith:

‘ أَخْبَرَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا اللَّيْثُ، عَنْ مُوسَى بْنِ عُلَىٍّ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ أَبِي قَيْسٍ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ الْعَاصِ، قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏ “‏ إِنَّ فَصْلَ مَا بَيْنَ صِيَامِنَا وَصِيَامِ أَهْلِ الْكِتَابِ أَكْلَةُ السُّحُورِ ‏”‏ ‏.‏

It was narrated that ‘Amr bin Al-As said:”The Messenger of Allah said: ‘The difference between our fasting and the fasting of the people of the Book, is eating Sahur.”‘

It is also recommended that it should be delayed to time before Fajr where it takes 50 ayats.

حَدَّثَنَا مُسْلِمُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامٌ، حَدَّثَنَا قَتَادَةُ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ، عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ ثَابِتٍ ـ رضى الله عنه ـ قَالَ تَسَحَّرْنَا مَعَ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم ثُمَّ قَامَ إِلَى الصَّلاَةِ‏.‏ قُلْتُ كَمْ كَانَ بَيْنَ الأَذَانِ وَالسَّحُورِ قَالَ قَدْرُ خَمْسِينَ آيَةً‏.‏

Narrated Anas:

Zaid bin Thabit said, “We took the Suhur with the Prophet (ﷺ) . Then he stood for the prayer.” I asked, “What was the interval between the Suhur and the Adhan?” He replied, “The interval was sufficient to recite fifty verses of the Qur’an.”

What should the fasting Muslim avoid?

When the true dawn has arrived. There are certain halal things that become prohibited until sunsets, such as eating, and drinking, intercourse with his wife, besides these, he should not speak foolishly, fight or argue unnecessarily, he must also avoid wasting time while fasting, he should stay away from things that do not benefit him, such as amusements, (video games, movies, etc). But not only his stomach should fast, but his eyes must also fast (avoiding looking at what is prohibited, such as opposite gender who is not mahram), his hands must fast (avoid harming the Muslims physically), his ears must fast (refrain from listening to music and falsehood, idle and dirty talks), his tongue must fast (from saying foolish and evil words, sinful and disbelief words, backbiting).

If someone is trying to fight or insult, then he must not also return, but rather “I am fasting”

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مَسْلَمَةَ الْقَعْنَبِيُّ، عَنْ مَالِكٍ، عَنْ أَبِي الزِّنَادِ، عَنِ الأَعْرَجِ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ ‏ “‏ الصِّيَامُ جُنَّةٌ إِذَا كَانَ أَحَدُكُمْ صَائِمًا فَلاَ يَرْفُثْ وَلاَ يَجْهَلْ فَإِنِ امْرُؤٌ قَاتَلَهُ أَوْ شَاتَمَهُ فَلْيَقُلْ إِنِّي صَائِمٌ إِنِّي صَائِمٌ ‏”‏ ‏.‏

Narrated Abu Hurairah:The Prophet (ﷺ) as saying: Fast is a shield ; when one of you is fasting, he should neither behave in an obscene manner nor foolishly. If a man fights or abuses him, he should say: I am fasting, I am fasting.

Sunan Abi Dawud 2363

He should avoid insulting or backbiting them, otherwise his reward for fasting will be reduced, if he keep continuing, then his fasting is not accepted.

حَدَّثَنَا آدَمُ بْنُ أَبِي إِيَاسٍ، حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ أَبِي ذِئْبٍ، حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ الْمَقْبُرِيُّ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ـ رضى الله عنه ـ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏ “‏ مَنْ لَمْ يَدَعْ قَوْلَ الزُّورِ وَالْعَمَلَ بِهِ فَلَيْسَ لِلَّهِ حَاجَةٌ فِي أَنْ يَدَعَ طَعَامَهُ وَشَرَابَهُ ‏”‏‏.‏

Narrated Abu Huraira:

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Whoever does not give up forged speech and evil actions, Allah is not in need of his leaving his food and drink (i.e. Allah will not accept his fasting.)”

He must avoid having intercourse with his wife, it is a serious thing to do while fasting, and if he committed it, then he has to make expiation which is to free a believing slave, if not possible, then fast for 2 consecutive lunar months, if not possible, then feed 60 poor people.

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مَحْبُوبٍ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْوَاحِدِ، حَدَّثَنَا مَعْمَرٌ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ، عَنْ حُمَيْدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ـ رضى الله عنه ـ قَالَ جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم فَقَالَ هَلَكْتُ‏.‏ فَقَالَ ‏”‏ وَمَا ذَاكَ ‏”‏‏.‏ قَالَ وَقَعْتُ بِأَهْلِي فِي رَمَضَانَ‏.‏ قَالَ ‏”‏ تَجِدُ رَقَبَةً ‏”‏‏.‏ قَالَ لاَ‏.‏ قَالَ ‏”‏ هَلْ تَسْتَطِيعُ أَنْ تَصُومَ شَهْرَيْنِ مُتَتَابِعَيْنِ ‏”‏‏.‏ قَالَ لاَ‏.‏ قَالَ ‏”‏ فَتَسْتَطِيعُ أَنْ تُطْعِمَ سِتِّينَ مِسْكِينًا ‏”‏‏.‏ قَالَ لاَ‏.‏ قَالَ فَجَاءَ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الأَنْصَارِ بِعَرَقٍ ـ وَالْعَرَقُ الْمِكْتَلُ فِيهِ تَمْرٌ ـ فَقَالَ ‏”‏ اذْهَبْ بِهَذَا، فَتَصَدَّقْ بِهِ ‏”‏‏.‏ قَالَ عَلَى أَحْوَجَ مِنَّا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ وَالَّذِي بَعَثَكَ بِالْحَقِّ مَا بَيْنَ لاَبَتَيْهَا أَهْلُ بَيْتٍ أَحْوَجُ مِنَّا‏.‏ ثُمَّ قَالَ ‏”‏ اذْهَبْ، فَأَطْعِمْهُ أَهْلَكَ ‏”‏‏.‏

Narrated Abu Huraira:

A man came to Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) and said, “I am ruined!” The Prophet (ﷺ) said to him, “What is the matter?” He said, “I have done a sexual relation with my wife (while fasting) in Ramadan.” The Prophet said to him?” “Can you afford to manumit a slave?” He said, “No.” The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Can you fast for two successive months?” He said, “No.” The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Can you feed sixty poor persons?” He said, “No.” Then an Ansari man came with an Irq (a big basket full of dates). The Prophet said (to the man), “Take this (basket) and give it in charity.” That man said, “To poorer people than we, O Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ)? By Him Who has sent you with the Truth! There is no house in between the two mountains (of the city of Medina) poorer than we.” So the Prophet (ﷺ) said (to him), “Go and feed it to your family.”

What should the fasting Muslim do?

He must strive to do more good deeds sincerely for sake of Allah only, guard his prayers, and as well perform nafl prayers such as Taraweeh (In Ramadan only), Tahajjud, Duha, and tahiyyat masjid, seek knowledge, and practice it, recite the Quran, and importantly, it should not be abandoned to being full of dust like many people do after Ramadan is over. learn the knowledge about Allah, through His Beautiful Names and Perfect Attributes, this is essential yet basic science, he must also start performing more Sunan and preach it to people.

He also should stop those who are backbiting or insulting.

He should keep making duas, because the supplication of fasting person is always accepted according to hadith:

حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ، عَنْ سَعْدَانَ الْجُهَنِيِّ، عَنْ سَعْدٍ أَبِي مُجَاهِدٍ الطَّائِيِّ، – وَكَانَ ثِقَةً – عَنْ أَبِي مُدِلَّةَ، – وَكَانَ ثِقَةً – عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ ‏ “‏ ثَلاَثَةٌ لاَ تُرَدُّ دَعْوَتُهُمُ الإِمَامُ الْعَادِلُ وَالصَّائِمُ حَتَّى يُفْطِرَ وَدَعْوَةُ الْمَظْلُومِ يَرْفَعُهَا اللَّهُ دُونَ الْغَمَامِ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ وَتُفْتَحُ لَهَا أَبْوَابُ السَّمَاءِ وَيَقُولُ بِعِزَّتِي لأَنْصُرَنَّكِ وَلَوْ بَعْدَ حِينٍ ‏”‏ ‏.‏

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:There are three whose supplications are not turned back: A just ruler, and a fasting person until he breaks his fast. And, the supplication of one who has been wronged is raised by Allah up to the clouds on the Day of Resurrection, and the gates of heaven are opened for it, and Allah says, ‘By My Might I will help you (against the wrongdoer) even if it is after a while.’”

Sunan Ibn Majah 1752

He should not forget to make duas, not only for himself but also for all Muslims who are facing calamities, mainly poverty, wars, and oppression. He should also start reciting dua that are from Quran and Sunnah, as they are best dua.

While feeling sense of hunger and thirst, he should remember his fellow who are suffering from food and drink shortage and are in need, he should be generous with them, and give sadaqa. Prophet peace be upon him used to be more generous than before in Ramadan.

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدَانُ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ، أَخْبَرَنَا يُونُسُ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ ـ رضى الله عنهما ـ قَالَ كَانَ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم أَجْوَدَ النَّاسِ، وَأَجْوَدُ مَا يَكُونُ فِي رَمَضَانَ، حِينَ يَلْقَاهُ جِبْرِيلُ، وَكَانَ جِبْرِيلُ ـ عَلَيْهِ السَّلاَمُ ـ يَلْقَاهُ فِي كُلِّ لَيْلَةٍ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ، فَيُدَارِسُهُ الْقُرْآنَ فَلَرَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم أَجْوَدُ بِالْخَيْرِ مِنَ الرِّيحِ الْمُرْسَلَةِ‏.

Narrated Ibn `Abbas:

The Prophet (ﷺ) was the most generous of all the people, and he used to become more generous in Ramadan when Gabriel met him. Gabriel used to meet him every night during Ramadan to revise the Qur’an with him. Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) then used to be more generous than the fast wind.

Sahih al-Bukhari 3554

He should always seek Allah’s forgiveness and mercy work on improving his Imaan. treat Ramadan as the month of changing to be a better Muslim, rather than merely a month that goes away, and then going back to his old lifestyle, this is not correct at all.


Iftar is meal eaten to break the fast when the sun has set. It is Sunnah to hasten to break it, according to hadith:

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ يُوسُفَ، أَخْبَرَنَا مَالِكٌ، عَنْ أَبِي حَازِمٍ، عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ ‏ “‏ لاَ يَزَالُ النَّاسُ بِخَيْرٍ مَا عَجَّلُوا الْفِطْرَ ‏”‏‏.‏

Narrated Sahl bin Sa`d:

Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said, “The people will remain on the right path as long as they hasten the breaking of the fast.”

Sahih al-Bukhari 1957

Unfortunately, it has become common practice for iftar to be treated like feast. People have made it extravagant like a Thanksgiving feast. This is prohibited. Allah says in Quran:

۞ يَـٰبَنِىٓ ءَادَمَ خُذُوا۟ زِينَتَكُمْ عِندَ كُلِّ مَسْجِدٍ وَكُلُوا۟ وَٱشْرَبُوا۟ وَلَا تُسْرِفُوٓا۟ ۚ إِنَّهُۥ لَا يُحِبُّ ٱلْمُسْرِفِينَ

 O Children of Adam! Take your adornment (by wearing your clean clothes), while praying1 and going round (the Tawâf of) the Ka‘bah, and eat and drink but waste not by extravagance, certainly He (Allâh) likes not Al-Musrifûn (those who waste by extravagance).

Surah Al-A’raf: 31

Prophet peace be upon him said that no container is worse than the stomach of son of Adam, and that those who eat too much will be hungriest on Day of Resurrection

Miqdam bin Ma’dikarib said:”I heard the Messenger of Allah (S.a.w) saying: ‘The human does not fill any container that is worse than his stomach. It is sufficient for the son of Adam to eat what will support his back. If this is not possible, then a third for food, a third for drink, and third for his breath.”

Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2380

Salman reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace, and blessings be upon him, said, “Verily, the people who ate to their fill the most in this world will be the hungriest on the Day of Resurrection.”

This also applies to Sehur. The Iftar of Prophet peace be upon him was simple as opposed to today. He would eat fresh dates to break his fast, and if he did not have any, he would eat dried dates, if not, then he would drink water.

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ رَافِعٍ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ، أَخْبَرَنَا جَعْفَرُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ، عَنْ ثَابِتٍ، عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ، قَالَ ‏ “‏ كَانَ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم يُفْطِرُ قَبْلَ أَنْ يُصَلِّيَ عَلَى رُطَبَاتٍ فَإِنْ لَمْ تَكُنْ رُطَبَاتٌ فَتُمَيْرَاتٍ فَإِنْ لَمْ تَكُنْ تُمَيْرَاتٌ حَسَا حَسَوَاتٍ مِنْ مَاءٍ ‏”‏ ‏.‏ قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ غَرِيبٌ ‏.‏ قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى وَرُوِيَ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم كَانَ يُفْطِرُ فِي الشِّتَاءِ عَلَى تَمَرَاتٍ وَفِي الصَّيْفِ عَلَى الْمَاءِ ‏.‏

Anas bin Malik narrated: “The Messenger of Allah would break the fast with fresh dates before performing Salat. If there were no fresh dates then (he would break the fast) with dried dates, and if there were no dried dates then he would take a few sips of water.”

Jami` at-Tirmidhi 696

Most women have also spent a lot of hours cooking, complaining of the heat and sweating instead of worshipping Allah by performing more good deeds which these time they have spent could have been used, this is not what Allah ordered from us, it is not the way of attaining piety as mentioned by Quran. May Allah forgive our sins and guide us to His path.

Other obligatory fasting:

There are many kinds of obligatory fasting that occurs due to certain situations, such as making up missed Ramadan fasting, expiation, vows to fast, and fasting for 3 days during hajj and seven days after returning to one’s home for those performing hajj tamattu and unable to afford sacrificial animal

Making up missed Ramadan fasting:

With exception of people who are suffering from chronic illness and lost hope, in that case, he / she should pay fidyah for each day missed. The obligation of making up missed Ramadan fasting occurs when one broke his fasting before sunset, whether for valid reasons or no reasons. Allah says in Quran:

فَمَن كَانَ مِنكُم مَّرِيضًا أَوۡ عَلَىٰ سَفَرٍ فَعِدَّةٌ مِّنۡ أَيَّامٍ أُخَرَ

but if any of you is ill or on a journey, the same number (should be made up) from other days.

Surah Baqarah: 184

There are many valid reasons, such as if one is suffering from extreme thirst or hunger, and he fears that he may die, then he should break his fast, he should make them up later after Ramadan is over, If he is a traveler and have to go for long journey due to necessary reasons, and he fears that fasting may harm him, then he can break it. But if he has strength and does not have this fear, then he should not break and continue his fasting instead. For the woman, if her menstruation starts, then her fast has broken, and she should not make her missed fasts up until her period is over. It is reported that Hazrat Aisha said:

حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ حُجْرٍ، أَخْبَرَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ مُسْهِرٍ، عَنْ عُبَيْدَةَ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، عَنِ الأَسْوَدِ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ، قَالَتْ كُنَّا نَحِيضُ عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم ثُمَّ نَطْهُرُ فَيَأْمُرُنَا بِقَضَاءِ الصِّيَامِ وَلاَ يَأْمُرُنَا بِقَضَاءِ الصَّلاَةِ ‏.‏ قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ ‏.‏ وَقَدْ رُوِيَ عَنْ مُعَاذَةَ عَنْ عَائِشَةَ أَيْضًا ‏.‏ وَالْعَمَلُ عَلَى هَذَا عِنْدَ أَهْلِ الْعِلْمِ لاَ نَعْلَمُ بَيْنَهُمُ اخْتِلاَفًا أَنَّ الْحَائِضَ تَقْضِي الصِّيَامَ وَلاَ تَقْضِي الصَّلاَةَ ‏.‏ قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى وَعُبَيْدَةُ هُوَ ابْنُ مُعَتِّبٍ الضَّبِّيُّ الْكُوفِيُّ يُكْنَى أَبَا عَبْدِ الْكَرِيمِ ‏.

Aishah narrated: “We would menstruate during the time of the Messenger of Allah, then when we became pure we were ordered to make up the fasts but we were not ordered to make up the Salat.”

Regarding pregnant woman

She is still like a normal person, she should fast, but if she fears that she will be harmed or her baby will be affected, then she can break the fast, but if she fears that she may die or will be harmed severely, then it becomes obligatory for her to break her fast, but she is not obligated to pay fidyah. If she only fears for her baby and not herself, some scholars say that it is permissible for her to break her fast, but she has to make her fast up and pay fidyah, because of the report by Hazrat Abdullah ibn Abbas

حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ الْمُثَنَّى، حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ أَبِي عَدِيٍّ، عَنْ سَعِيدٍ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ، عَنْ عَزْرَةَ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، ‏{‏ وَعَلَى الَّذِينَ يُطِيقُونَهُ فِدْيَةٌ طَعَامُ مِسْكِينٍ ‏}‏ قَالَ كَانَتْ رُخْصَةً لِلشَّيْخِ الْكَبِيرِ وَالْمَرْأَةِ الْكَبِيرَةِ وَهُمَا يُطِيقَانِ الصِّيَامَ أَنْ يُفْطِرَا وَيُطْعِمَا مَكَانَ كُلِّ يَوْمٍ مِسْكِينًا وَالْحُبْلَى وَالْمُرْضِعُ إِذَا خَافَتَا – قَالَ أَبُو دَاوُدَ يَعْنِي عَلَى أَوْلاَدِهِمَا – أَفْطَرَتَا وَأَطْعَمَتَا ‏.‏

Explaining the verse; “For those who can do it (with hard-ship) is a ransom, the feeding of one, that is indigent,” he said: This was a concession granted to the aged man and woman who were able to keep fast; they were allowed to leave the fast and instead feed an indigent person for each fast; (and a concession) to pregnant and suckling woman when they apprehended harm (to themselves).

People who break their fasts for no reason have committed a major sin, and they should repent back to Allah, regretting over what they have done and should never do it again, such if one intentionally eats or drink, then they should make the fast up.

People who break their fast out of ignorance or forgetfulness, such if he drink water forgetfully, and realized that he was fasting, his fast is not broken and he should contiune and does not have to make up fast. This is mercy from Allah

” حَدَّثَنِي يُوسُفُ بْنُ مُوسَى، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو أُسَامَةَ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي عَوْفٌ، عَنْ خِلاَسٍ، وَمُحَمَّدٍ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ـ رضى الله عنه ـ قَالَ قَالَ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏ “‏ مَنْ أَكَلَ نَاسِيًا وَهْوَ صَائِمٌ فَلْيُتِمَّ صَوْمَهُ، فَإِنَّمَا أَطْعَمَهُ اللَّهُ وَسَقَاهُ ‏”‏‏.‏

Narrated Abu Huraira:

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “If somebody eats something forgetfully while he is fasting, then he should complete his fast, for Allah has made him eat and drink.

Expiation fasting:

There are many kind of expiation fasting, they are:

Fasting as expiation for having intercourse during Ramadan

Prophet peace be upon him said in hadith:

حَدَّثَنَا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرٌ، عَنْ مَنْصُورٍ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ، عَنْ حُمَيْدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ـ رضى الله عنه ـ جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم فَقَالَ إِنَّ الأَخِرَ وَقَعَ عَلَى امْرَأَتِهِ فِي رَمَضَانَ‏.‏ فَقَالَ ‏”‏ أَتَجِدُ مَا تُحَرِّرُ رَقَبَةً ‏”‏‏.‏ قَالَ لاَ‏.‏ قَالَ ‏”‏ فَتَسْتَطِيعُ أَنْ تَصُومَ شَهْرَيْنِ مُتَتَابِعَيْنِ ‏”‏‏.‏ قَالَ لاَ‏.‏ قَالَ ‏”‏ أَفَتَجِدُ مَا تُطْعِمُ بِهِ سِتِّينَ مِسْكِينًا ‏”‏‏.‏ قَالَ لاَ‏.‏ قَالَ فَأُتِيَ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم بِعَرَقٍ فِيهِ تَمْرٌ ـ وَهُوَ الزَّبِيلُ ـ قَالَ ‏”‏ أَطْعِمْ هَذَا عَنْكَ ‏”‏‏.‏ قَالَ عَلَى أَحْوَجَ مِنَّا مَا بَيْنَ لاَبَتَيْهَا أَهْلُ بَيْتٍ أَحْوَجُ مِنَّا‏.‏ قَالَ ‏”‏ فَأَطْعِمْهُ أَهْلَكَ ‏”‏‏.‏

Narrated Abu Huraira:

A man came to the Prophet (ﷺ) and said, “I had sexual intercourse with my wife on Ramadan (while fasting).” The Prophet (ﷺ) asked him, “Can you afford to manumit a slave?” He replied in the negative. The Prophet (ﷺ) asked him, “Can you fast for two successive months?” He replied in the negative. He asked him, “Can you afford to feed sixty poor persons?” He replied in the negative. (Abu Huraira added): Then a basket full of dates was brought to the Prophet (ﷺ) and he said (to that man), “Feed (poor people) with this by way of atonement.” He said, “(Should I feed it) to poorer people than we? There is no poorer house than ours between its (Medina’s) mountains.” The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Then feed your family with it.”

Fasting as expiation for accidental killing (if other options are not possible).

Fasting for two consective months for accidental killing

وَمَا كَانَ لِمُؤْمِنٍ أَن يَقْتُلَ مُؤْمِنًا إِلَّا خَطَـًٔا ۚ وَمَن قَتَلَ مُؤْمِنًا خَطَـًٔا فَتَحْرِيرُ رَقَبَةٍ مُّؤْمِنَةٍ وَدِيَةٌ مُّسَلَّمَةٌ إِلَىٰٓ أَهْلِهِۦٓ إِلَّآ أَن يَصَّدَّقُوا۟ ۚ فَإِن كَانَ مِن قَوْمٍ عَدُوٍّ لَّكُمْ وَهُوَ مُؤْمِنٌ فَتَحْرِيرُ رَقَبَةٍ مُّؤْمِنَةٍ ۖ وَإِن كَانَ مِن قَوْمٍۭ بَيْنَكُمْ وَبَيْنَهُم مِّيثَـٰقٌ فَدِيَةٌ مُّسَلَّمَةٌ إِلَىٰٓ أَهْلِهِۦ وَتَحْرِيرُ رَقَبَةٍ مُّؤْمِنَةٍ ۖ فَمَن لَّمْ يَجِدْ فَصِيَامُ شَهْرَيْنِ مُتَتَابِعَيْنِ تَوْبَةً مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ ۗ وَكَانَ ٱللَّهُ عَلِيمًا حَكِيمًا

It is not for a believer to kill a believer except (that it be) by mistake; and whosoever kills a believer by mistake, (it is ordained that) he must set free a believing slave and a compensation (blood-money, i.e. Diya) be given to the deceased’s family unless they remit it. If the deceased belonged to a people at war with you and he was a believer, the freeing of a believing slave (is prescribed); and if he belonged to a people with whom you have a treaty of mutual alliance, compensation (blood-money – Diya) must be paid to his family, and a believing slave must be freed. And whoso finds this (the penance of freeing a slave) beyond his means, he must fast for two consecutive months in order to seek repentance from Allâh. And Allâh is Ever All-Knowing, All-Wise.

Fasting as expiation for Zihaar (type of divorce practiced during Days of Ignorance)

Zihaar was a form of divorce that was practiced during Days of Ignorance. The husband if he wanted to separate himself from his wife, would say to her “You are like my mother’s back”. Allah prohibited this practice, and set its expiation for those who have committed it, a believing slave was to be freed, if no slaves, then fast two consecutive months, if not then feed 60 poor people

وَٱلَّذِينَ يُظَـٰهِرُونَ مِن نِّسَآئِهِمْ ثُمَّ يَعُودُونَ لِمَا قَالُوا۟ فَتَحْرِيرُ رَقَبَةٍ مِّن قَبْلِ أَن يَتَمَآسَّا ۚ ذَٰلِكُمْ تُوعَظُونَ بِهِۦ ۚ وَٱللَّهُ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ خَبِيرٌ

  And those who make unlawful to them their wives by Zihâr and wish to free themselves from what they uttered, (the penalty) in that case is the freeing of a slave before they touch each other. That is an admonition to you (so that you may not repeat such an ill thing). And Allâh is All-Aware of what you do.

فَمَن لَّمْ يَجِدْ فَصِيَامُ شَهْرَيْنِ مُتَتَابِعَيْنِ مِن قَبْلِ أَن يَتَمَآسَّا ۖ فَمَن لَّمْ يَسْتَطِعْ فَإِطْعَامُ سِتِّينَ مِسْكِينًا ۚ ذَٰلِكَ لِتُؤْمِنُوا۟ بِٱللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِۦ ۚ وَتِلْكَ حُدُودُ ٱللَّهِ ۗ وَلِلْكَـٰفِرِينَ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ

  And he who finds not (the money for freeing a slave) must fast two successive months before they both touch each other. And he who is unable to do so, should feed sixty Miskîns (poor). That is in order that you may have perfect Faith in Allâh and His Messenger. These are the limits set by Allâh. And for disbelievers, there is a painful torment.

Surah Al Mujadila: 3-4

Expiation for breaking oath:

This is the only obligation when one is unable to afford to feed 10 poor people or family members or clothe them, and does not have a slave. then he must fast for 3 days

لَا يُؤَاخِذُكُمُ ٱللَّهُ بِٱللَّغْوِ فِىٓ أَيْمَـٰنِكُمْ وَلَـٰكِن يُؤَاخِذُكُم بِمَا عَقَّدتُّمُ ٱلْأَيْمَـٰنَ ۖ فَكَفَّـٰرَتُهُۥٓ إِطْعَامُ عَشَرَةِ مَسَـٰكِينَ مِنْ أَوْسَطِ مَا تُطْعِمُونَ أَهْلِيكُمْ أَوْ كِسْوَتُهُمْ أَوْ تَحْرِيرُ رَقَبَةٍ ۖ فَمَن لَّمْ يَجِدْ فَصِيَامُ ثَلَـٰثَةِ أَيَّامٍ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ كَفَّـٰرَةُ أَيْمَـٰنِكُمْ إِذَا حَلَفْتُمْ ۚ وَٱحْفَظُوٓا۟ أَيْمَـٰنَكُمْ ۚ كَذَٰلِكَ يُبَيِّنُ ٱللَّهُ لَكُمْ ءَايَـٰتِهِۦ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَشْكُرُونَ

Allah will not impose blame upon you for what is meaningless in your oaths, but He will impose blame upon you for [breaking] what you intended of oaths. So its expiation is the feeding of ten needy people from the average of that which you feed your [own] families or clothing them or the freeing of a slave. But whoever cannot find [or afford it] – then a fast of three days [is required]. That is the expiation for oaths when you have sworn. But guard your oaths. Thus does Allah make clear to you His verses [i.e., revealed law] that you may be grateful.

Surah Al-Ma’idah: 89

Vow to fast:

Vows (Nadhr) is when one obligates himself to do acts that is not obligatory, which then becomes obligatory for him. This includes fasting. Vows if it is not disobedience against Allah, must be fulfilled. Likewise as long as one did not vow to fast on forbidden time, then it must be fulfilled.

Narrated `Aisha:

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَاصِمٍ، عَنْ مَالِكٍ، عَنْ طَلْحَةَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ، عَنِ الْقَاسِمِ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ ـ رضى الله عنها ـ قَالَتْ قَالَ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏ “‏ مَنْ نَذَرَ أَنْ يُطِيعَ اللَّهَ فَلْيُطِعْهُ، وَمَنْ نَذَرَ أَنْ يَعْصِيَهُ فَلاَ يَعْصِهِ ‏”‏‏.‏

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Whoever vowed to be obedient to Allah, must be obedient to Him; and whoever vowed to be disobedient to Allah, should not be disobedient to Him.”

Sahih al-Bukhari 6700

This also includes mustahabb fasting such as Thursday and Monday, 13 14 15 of each lunar month. However, if he tries to fulfill the vow of fasting in Ramadan, this is not acceptable.

It is not allowed to make vows on forbidden times to fast, such as two Eids, 3 days of Day of Tashreeq, etc.

Voluntary fasting:

There are many voluntary fastings compared to obligatory fasting. They are:

Monday and Thursday:

Prophet peace be upon him used to fast on Mondays and Thursday as per ahadith. According to another hadith, the deeds are presented to Allah on Monday and Thursday

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو حَفْصٍ، عَمْرُو بْنُ عَلِيٍّ الْفَلاَّسُ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ دَاوُدَ، عَنْ ثَوْرِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ، عَنْ خَالِدِ بْنِ مَعْدَانَ، عَنْ رَبِيعَةَ الْجُرَشِيِّ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ، قَالَتْ كَانَ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم يَتَحَرَّى صَوْمَ الاِثْنَيْنِ وَالْخَمِيسِ ‏.‏ قَالَ وَفِي الْبَابِ عَنْ حَفْصَةَ وَأَبِي قَتَادَةَ وَأَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ وَأُسَامَةَ بْنِ زَيْدٍ ‏.‏ قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى حَدِيثُ عَائِشَةَ حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ غَرِيبٌ مِنْ هَذَا الْوَجْهِ ‏.‏

Aishah narrated:”The Prophet used to try to fast on Mondays and Thursdays.”

Jami` at-Tirmidhi 745

حَدَّثَنَا مُوسَى بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبَانُ، حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى، عَنْ عُمَرَ بْنِ أَبِي الْحَكَمِ بْنِ ثَوْبَانَ، عَنْ مَوْلَى، قُدَامَةَ بْنِ مَظْعُونٍ عَنْ مَوْلَى، أُسَامَةَ بْنِ زَيْدٍ أَنَّهُ انْطَلَقَ مَعَ أُسَامَةَ إِلَى وَادِي الْقُرَى فِي طَلَبِ مَالٍ لَهُ فَكَانَ يَصُومُ يَوْمَ الاِثْنَيْنِ وَيَوْمَ الْخَمِيسِ فَقَالَ لَهُ مَوْلاَهُ لِمَ تَصُومُ يَوْمَ الاِثْنَيْنِ وَيَوْمَ الْخَمِيسِ وَأَنْتَ شَيْخٌ كَبِيرٌ فَقَالَ إِنَّ نَبِيَّ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم كَانَ يَصُومُ يَوْمَ الاِثْنَيْنِ وَيَوْمَ الْخَمِيسِ وَسُئِلَ عَنْ ذَلِكَ فَقَالَ ‏ “‏ إِنَّ أَعْمَالَ الْعِبَادِ تُعْرَضُ يَوْمَ الاِثْنَيْنِ وَيَوْمَ الْخَمِيسِ ‏”‏ ‏.‏ قَالَ أَبُو دَاوُدَ كَذَا قَالَ هِشَامٌ الدَّسْتَوَائِيُّ عَنْ يَحْيَى عَنْ عُمَرَ بْنِ أَبِي الْحَكَمِ ‏.‏

Narrated Usamah ibn Zayd:

The client of Usamah ibn Zayd said that he went along with Usamah to Wadi al-Qura in pursuit of his camels. He would fast on Monday and Thursday. His client said to him: Why do you fast on Monday and Thursday, while you are an old man? He said: The Prophet of Allah (ﷺ) used to fast on Monday and Thursday. When he was asked about it, he said: The works of the servants (of Allah) are presented (to Allah) on Monday and Thursday.

Sunan Abi Dawud 2436

The virtue of Monday is that Prophet peace be upon him was born on the day and it is also when the Revelation started.

وَحَدَّثَنِي زُهَيْرُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ مَهْدِيٍّ، حَدَّثَنَا مَهْدِيُّ بْنُ مَيْمُونٍ، عَنْ غَيْلاَنَ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مَعْبَدٍ الزِّمَّانِيِّ، عَنْ أَبِي قَتَادَةَ الأَنْصَارِيِّ، رضى الله عنه أَنَّرَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم سُئِلَ عَنْ صَوْمِ الاِثْنَيْنِ فَقَالَ ‏ “‏ فِيهِ وُلِدْتُ وَفِيهِ أُنْزِلَ عَلَىَّ ‏”‏ ‏.‏

Abu Qatada Ansari (Allah be pleased with him) reported that Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) was asked about fasting on Monday, whereupon he said: It is (the day) when I was born and revelation was sent down to me.

Sahih Muslim 1162e

The fasting of Prophet Dawud peace be upon him

Prophet Dawud peace be upon him used to fast on a day and then not fast on second. According to ahadith, it is most virtuous and beloved fasting to Allah.

Abdullah bin Amr narrated that:

The Messenger of Allah said: “The most virtuous fast is the fast of my brother Dawud. He would fast a day, and not fast (the next) day. He would not flee at the time of engagement (with the enemy).”

Jami` at-Tirmidhi 770

3 days of each Lunar month (13, 14, 15)

Abu Dharr (RAA) narrated that The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) commanded us to fast for three days of every month; that is on the days of the full moon; the 13th , 14th , and 15th (of the lunar month).’ Related by An-Nasa’i and At-Tirmidhi and rendered authentic by Ibn Hibban.


Fasting in the month of Shaban until halfway

This is for those who do not have habit of fasting. It is allowed for those who have habit of fasting to fast in the month except the Day of Doubt (when the moon for Ramadan has not been sighted due to clouds or less visibility)

حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ حَنْبَلٍ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ مَهْدِيٍّ، عَنْ مُعَاوِيَةَ بْنِ صَالِحٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أَبِي قَيْسٍ، سَمِعَ عَائِشَةَ، تَقُولُ كَانَ أَحَبَّ الشُّهُورِ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم أَنْ يَصُومَهُ شَعْبَانُ ثُمَّ يَصِلُهُ بِرَمَضَانَ ‏.‏

Narrated Aisha, Ummul Mu’minin:

The month most liked by the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) for fasting was Sha’ban. He then joined it with Ramadan.

Sunan Abi Dawud 2431

حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْعَزِيزِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ، عَنِ الْعَلاَءِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏”‏ إِذَا بَقِيَ نِصْفٌ مِنْ شَعْبَانَ فَلاَ تَصُومُوا ‏”‏ ‏.‏ قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى حَدِيثُ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ لاَ نَعْرِفُهُ إِلاَّ مِنْ هَذَا الْوَجْهِ عَلَى هَذَا اللَّفْظِ ‏.‏ وَمَعْنَى هَذَا الْحَدِيثِ عِنْدَ بَعْضِ أَهْلِ الْعِلْمِ أَنْ يَكُونَ الرَّجُلُ مُفْطِرًا فَإِذَا بَقِيَ مِنْ شَعْبَانَ شَيْءٌ أَخَذَ فِي الصَّوْمِ لِحَالِ شَهْرِ رَمَضَانَ ‏.‏ وَقَدْ رُوِيَ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم مَا يُشْبِهُ قَوْلَهُمْ حَيْثُ قَالَ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏”‏ لاَ تَقَدَّمُوا شَهْرَ رَمَضَانَ بِصِيَامٍ إِلاَّ أَنْ يُوَافِقَ ذَلِكَ صَوْمًا كَانَ يَصُومُهُ أَحَدُكُمْ ‏”‏ ‏.‏ وَقَدْ دَلَّ فِي هَذَا الْحَدِيثِ أَنَّمَا الْكَرَاهِيَةُ عَلَى مَنْ يَتَعَمَّدُ الصِّيَامَ لِحَالِ رَمَضَانَ ‏.‏

Abu Hurairah narrated that:

the Messenger of Allah said: “When a half of Sha’ban remains then do not fast.”

Tirmidhi 738

6 days of Shawwal:

This is to be done after one has completed the fasts of Ramadan. As for those with missed fasts, they have to complete them first before making intention for fasting 6 days of Shawwal, according to the scholars

حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ نُمَيْرٍ، عَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ سَعِيدٍ، عَنْ عُمَرَ بْنِ ثَابِتٍ، عَنْ أَبِي أَيُّوبَ، قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ ‏ “‏ مَنْ صَامَ رَمَضَانَ ثُمَّ أَتْبَعَهُ بِسِتٍّ مِنْ شَوَّالٍ، كَانَ كَصَوْمِ الدَّهْرِ ‏”‏ ‏.‏

It was narrated from Abu Ayyub that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:“Whoever fasts Ramadan then follows it with six days of Shawwal, it is as if he fasted for a lifetime.”

Sunan Ibn Majah 1716

Fasting on day of Arafah for those who are not performing Hajj

It is recommended for those who are not performing Hajj, to fast on day of Arafah. Prophet peace be upon him said

I seek from Allah that fasting on the day of ‘Arafa may atone for the sins of the preceding and the coming years

Sahih Muslim 1162a

This is only for minor sins. Major sins require repentance.

Day of Ashora

Originally it was obligatory until in 2nd year of Hijrah, Ramadan was revealed, it is great sunnah.

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، وَعَمْرٌو النَّاقِدُ، جَمِيعًا عَنْ سُفْيَانَ، – قَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ، – عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أَبِي يَزِيدَ، سَمِعَ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ، – رضى الله عنهما – وَسُئِلَ عَنْ صِيَامِ، يَوْمِ عَاشُورَاءَ ‏.‏ فَقَالَ مَا عَلِمْتُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم صَامَ يَوْمًا يَطْلُبُ فَضْلَهُ عَلَى الأَيَّامِ إِلاَّ هَذَا الْيَوْمَ وَلاَ شَهْرًا إِلاَّ هَذَا الشَّهْرَ يَعْنِي رَمَضَانَ ‏.‏

Ibn Abbas was asked about observing of fast on the day of Ashura, whereupon he said:I do not know Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) singling out any day’s fast and considering it more excellent than another, except this day (the day of Ashura) and this month, meaning the month of Ramadan

Sahih Muslim 1132a

It was narrated from Abu Qatadah that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:“Fasting the day of ‘Ashura’, I hope, will expiate for the sins of the previous year.”

Sunan Ibn Majah 1738

Fasting a great deal in month of Muharram

Abu Haraira (Allah be pleased with him) reported Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: The most excellent fast after Ramadan is God’s month. al-Muharram

Sahih Muslim 1163a

Forbidden time to fast:

the two Eids

It is forbidden to fast on these days, as Prophet peace be upon him made it clear. Even to vow to fast on it will not be accepted, as there should be no disobedience to Allah

حَدَّثَنَا سَهْلُ بْنُ أَبِي سَهْلٍ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ، عَنْ أَبِي عُبَيْدٍ، قَالَ شَهِدْتُ الْعِيدَ مَعَ عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ فَبَدَأَ بِالصَّلاَةِ قَبْلَ الْخُطْبَةِ فَقَالَ: إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ نَهَى عَنْ صِيَامِ هَذَيْنِ الْيَوْمَيْنِ، يَوْمِ الْفِطْرِ وَيَوْمِ الأَضْحَى. أَمَّا يَوْمُ الْفِطْرِ، فَيَوْمُ فِطْرِكُمْ مِنْ صِيَامِكُمْ. وَيَوْمُ الأَضْحَى تَأْكُلُونَ فِيهِ مِنْ لَحْمِ نُسُكِكُمْ ‏.‏

It was narrated that Abu ‘Ubaid said:

“I was present for ‘Eid with ‘Umar bin Khattab. He started with the prayer before the sermon, and said: ‘The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) forbade fasting on these two days, the Day of Fitr and the Day of Adha. As for the Day of Fitr, it is the day when you break your fast, and on the Day of Adha you eat the meat of your sacrifices.’”

Sunan Ibn Majah 1722

Fasting 6 days of Shawwal can be done on the second day of Shawwal. Eid fitr is only 1 day.

Day of Tashreeq:

These are after Eid al Adha, they are 3 days. 11, 12 and 13 of Dhul-Hijjah. the only concession given for fasting is for pilgrims who are performing Hajj Tamattu or Qiran, and could not find sacrificial animals

وَحَدَّثَنَا سُرَيْجُ بْنُ يُونُسَ، حَدَّثَنَا هُشَيْمٌ، أَخْبَرَنَا خَالِدٌ، عَنْ أَبِي الْمَلِيحِ، عَنْ نُبَيْشَةَ، الْهُذَلِيِّ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏ “‏ أَيَّامُ التَّشْرِيقِ أَيَّامُ أَكْلٍ وَشُرْبٍ ‏”‏ ‏.‏

Nubaisha al-Hudhali reported Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: The days of Tashriq are the days of eating and drinking.

Muslim 1141

Day of Doubt:

These occur at end of Shaban, when the moon could not be sighted due to cloudy sky, but if it is clear, then there is no doubt. Prophet peace be upon him said

“Fast when you see the new moon and break your fast when you see the new moon, and if you are not sure, then complete the number of Sha’baan as thirty days.”

Menstruation period and bleeding following childbirth.

Women are not allowed to fast when their period starts and when they bleed following childbirth.

Makrooh time for fasting:

Fasting on Friday or Saturday

Prophet peace be upon him said

“None of you should fast on Friday unless he fasts before it, or he fasts after it.”

Jami` at-Tirmidhi 743 and Bukhari

Abdullah bin Busr narrated from his sister that :the Messenger of Allah said: “Do not fast on Saturday except for what has been made obligatory upon you (by Allah). If one of you does not find but a grape peal or a tree’s twig, then let him chew it.”

Jami` at-Tirmidhi 744

Al-Tirmidhi said: What is meant by its being makrooh is that a man should not single out Saturday for fasting because the Jews venerate Saturday.

What breaks the fast?

Before they are discussed, with exception of menstruation and nifaas there are three conditions that have to be met: that the person was aware of the ruling and not ignorant of it; that he did it knowingly and not out of forgetfulness; and that he did it by choice and was not forced to do it.

There are many actions that lead to breaking of fast. They are:

Anything that reaches the stomach if let intentionally (foods drink, and reaching from the nose):

This is at least a basic ruling. Once the true dawn has arrived, it becomes prohibited to eat and drink until sunset. If one forgetfully eat or drink, his fast is not broken, as already discussed above. This ruling also applies to the injection of nutrients which falls under food and drink that breaks the fast, as for other injections that do not contain nutrients but administered for purpose of medical treatment, they don’t break the fast. Anything that reaches the stomach through the nose, if done intentionally, also breaks the fast.

Prophet peace be upon him said regarding the nose:

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْوَهَّابِ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْحَكَمِ الْبَغْدَادِيُّ الْوَرَّاقُ، وَأَبُو عَمَّارٍ الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ حُرَيْثٍ قَالاَ حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سُلَيْمٍ، حَدَّثَنِي إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ كَثِيرٍ، قَالَ سَمِعْتُ عَاصِمَ بْنَ لَقِيطِ بْنِ صَبْرَةَ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، قَالَ قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَخْبِرْنِي عَنِ الْوُضُوءِ، ‏.‏ قَالَ ‏ “‏ أَسْبِغِ الْوُضُوءَ وَخَلِّلْ بَيْنَ الأَصَابِعِ وَبَالِغْ فِي الاِسْتِنْشَاقِ إِلاَّ أَنْ تَكُونَ صَائِمًا ‏”‏ ‏.‏ قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ ‏.‏ وَقَدْ كَرِهَ أَهْلُ الْعِلْمِ السَّعُوطَ لِلصَّائِمِ وَرَأَوْا أَنَّ ذَلِكَ يُفْطِرُهُ وَفِي الْحَدِيثِ مَا يُقَوِّي قَوْلَهُمْ ‏.‏

the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Snuff up water deeply into the nose (when doing wudu), except when you are fasting.”

Blood transfusion and kidney dialysis also fall under invalidating the fast.

Smoking also breaks the fasting. It is haram whether one is fasting or not, and must be stopped.

Intercourse and ejaculation:

It is a serious and grave thing to break fast. The person who has committed intercourse during Ramadan faces severe expiations. It does not matter if he did not ejaculate. As long as the tip of his private part reaches into the female private part, then the fasting has broken. If the ejaculation of semen occurs with pleasure, then his fasting is also broken, masturbation which is actually haram also breaks the fast if the ejaculation takes place, but there is no expiation for masturbating while fasting, rather he has to repent to Allah, and make up the fast.

Prostatic fluid do not break the fast

Letting blood out by means

One of these means is cupping. Prophet peace be upon him said:

حَدَّثَنَا مُسَدَّدٌ، حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى، عَنْ هِشَامٍ، ح وَحَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ حَنْبَلٍ، حَدَّثَنَا حَسَنُ بْنُ مُوسَى، حَدَّثَنَا شَيْبَانُ، – جَمِيعًا – عَنْ يَحْيَى، عَنْ أَبِي قِلاَبَةَ، عَنْ أَبِي أَسْمَاءَ، – يَعْنِي الرَّحَبِيَّ – عَنْ ثَوْبَانَ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ ‏ “‏ أَفْطَرَ الْحَاجِمُ وَالْمَحْجُومُ ‏”‏ ‏.‏ قَالَ شَيْبَانُ أَخْبَرَنِي أَبُو قِلاَبَةَ أَنَّ أَبَا أَسْمَاءَ الرَّحَبِيَّ حَدَّثَهُ أَنَّ ثَوْبَانَ مَوْلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم أَخْبَرَهُ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏.‏

“The cupper and the one for whom cupping is done have both invalidated their fast.”

Abu Dawood, 2367

This also applies to donating blood. As for those who suffer from nosebleed, it does not break his fast.

Vomiting intentionally

To vomit, breaks the fast, no matter how much it is, whether small amount or large. as long as one has done it willingly. Prophet peace be upon him said

حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ حُجْرٍ، حَدَّثَنَا عِيسَى بْنُ يُونُسَ، عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ حَسَّانَ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سِيرِينَ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ ‏ “‏ مَنْ ذَرَعَهُ الْقَىْءُ فَلَيْسَ عَلَيْهِ قَضَاءٌ وَمَنِ اسْتَقَاءَ عَمْدًا فَلْيَقْضِ ‏”‏ ‏.‏ قَالَ وَفِي الْبَابِ عَنْ أَبِي الدَّرْدَاءِ وَثَوْبَانَ وَفَضَالَةَ بْنِ عُبَيْدٍ ‏.‏ قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى حَدِيثُ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ غَرِيبٌ لاَ نَعْرِفُهُ مِنْ حَدِيثِ هِشَامٍ عَنِ ابْنِ سِيرِينَ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم إِلاَّ مِنْ حَدِيثِ عِيسَى بْنِ يُونُسَ ‏.‏ وَقَالَ مُحَمَّدٌ لاَ أَرَاهُ مَحْفُوظًا ‏.‏ قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى وَقَدْ رُوِيَ هَذَا الْحَدِيثُ مِنْ غَيْرِ وَجْهٍ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم وَلاَ يَصِحُّ إِسْنَادُهُ ‏.‏ وَقَدْ رُوِيَ عَنْ أَبِي الدَّرْدَاءِ وَثَوْبَانَ وَفَضَالَةَ بْنِ عُبَيْدٍ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَاءَ فَأَفْطَرَ ‏.‏ وَإِنَّمَا مَعْنَى هَذَا أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم كَانَ صَائِمًا مُتَطَوِّعًا فَقَاءَ فَضَعُفَ فَأَفْطَرَ لِذَلِكَ ‏.‏ هَكَذَا رُوِيَ فِي بَعْضِ الْحَدِيثِ مُفَسَّرًا ‏.‏ وَالْعَمَلُ عِنْدَ أَهْلِ الْعِلْمِ عَلَى حَدِيثِ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم أَنَّ الصَّائِمَ إِذَا ذَرَعَهُ الْقَىْءُ فَلاَ قَضَاءَ عَلَيْهِ وَإِذَا اسْتَقَاءَ عَمْدًا فَلْيَقْضِ ‏.‏ وَبِهِ يَقُولُ سُفْيَانُ الثَّوْرِيُّ وَالشَّافِعِيُّ وَأَحْمَدُ وَإِسْحَاقُ ‏.‏

“Whoever vomits involuntarily does not have to make up the fast, but whoever vomits deliberately let him make up the fast.”

Menstruation bleeding and nifaas

If her period starts while she is fasting, her fasting has broken, even if it is moment before the sun has set and she is not allowed to fast or make them up until her period is over. Prophet peace be upon him said:

Isn’t it true that a woman can neither pray nor fast during her menses?

Virtue of fasting

It is way of attaining piety as mentioned in Quran

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ كُتِبَ عَلَيْكُمُ ٱلصِّيَامُ كَمَا كُتِبَ عَلَى ٱلَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِكُمْ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَتَّقُونَ

  O you who believe! Observing As-Saum (the fasting) is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, that you may become Al-Muttaqûn (the pious – See V.2: 2).

Fasting helps one to be better at self control. Certain halal things become haram until sunset, then that person can control himself from haram actions as well. thus it is a way to be righteous.

It is a loved deed by Allah

عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ، عَنْ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: ” يَقُولُ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ: الصَّوْمُ لِي، وَأَنَا أَجْزِي بِهِ، يَدَعُ شَهْوَتَهُ وَأَكْلَهُ وَشُرْبَهُ مِنْ أَجْلِي، وَالصَّوْمُ جُنَّةٌ(1)، وَلِلصَّائِمِ فَرْحَتَانِ: فَرْحَةٌ حِينَ يُفْطِرُ، وَفَرْحَةٌ حِينَ يَلْقَى رَبَّهُ، وَلَخُلُوفُ(2) فَمِ الصَّائِمِ أَطْيَبُ عِنْدَ اللَّهِ مِنْ رِيحِ الْمِسْكِ”.

On the authority of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) from the Prophet (ﷺ), who said:Allah (mighty and sublime be He) says: Fasting is Mine and it is I who give reward for it. [A man] gives up his sexual passion, his food and his drink for my sake. Fasting is like a shield, and he who fasts has two joys: a joy when he breaks his fast and a joy when he meets his Lord. The change in the breath of the mouth of him who fasts is better in Allah’s estimation than the smell of musk. It was related by al-Bukhari (also by Muslim, Malik, at-Tirmidhi, an-Nasa’i and Ibn Majah).

This is because all other deeds are visible, but fasting is hidden deed. It is impossible to know whether one is fasting or not, therefore it is loved by Allah.

There is a door of Paradise for those fasting, known as ar-Rayyan

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا خَالِدُ بْنُ مَخْلَدٍ، – وَهُوَ الْقَطَوَانِيُّ – عَنْ سُلَيْمَانَ، بْنِ بِلاَلٍ حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو حَازِمٍ، عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ، – رضى الله عنه – قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏ “‏ إِنَّ فِي الْجَنَّةِ بَابًا يُقَالُ لَهُ الرَّيَّانُ يَدْخُلُ مِنْهُ الصَّائِمُونَ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ لاَ يَدْخُلُ مَعَهُمْ أَحَدٌ غَيْرُهُمْ يُقَالُ أَيْنَ الصَّائِمُونَ فَيَدْخُلُونَ مِنْهُ فَإِذَا دَخَلَ آخِرُهُمْ أُغْلِقَ فَلَمْ يَدْخُلْ مِنْهُ أَحَدٌ ‏”‏ ‏.‏

Sahl b. Sa’d (Allah be pleased with him) reported Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) as saying:In Paradise there is a gate which is called Rayyan through which only the people who fast would enter on the Day on Resurrection. None else would enter along with them. It would be proclaimed: Where are the people who fast that they should be admitted into it? And when the last of them would enter, it would be closed and no one would enter it.

It keeps the fasting person away from Hellfire, if they are engaged in jihad

وَحَدَّثَنِي إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ مَنْصُورٍ، وَعَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ بِشْرٍ الْعَبْدِيُّ، قَالاَ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ، أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ جُرَيْجٍ، عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ سَعِيدٍ، وَسُهَيْلِ بْنِ أَبِي صَالِحٍ، أَنَّهُمَا سَمِعَا النُّعْمَانَ بْنَ، أَبِي عَيَّاشٍ الزُّرَقِيَّ يُحَدِّثُ عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيِّ، – رضى الله عنه – قَالَ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم يَقُولُ ‏ “‏ مَنْ صَامَ يَوْمًا فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ بَاعَدَ اللَّهُ وَجْهَهُ عَنِ النَّارِ سَبْعِينَ خَرِيفًا ‏”‏ ‏.‏

Abu Sa’id al-Khudri (Allah be pleased with him) reported Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: He who observes fast for a day in the way of Allah He would remove his face from the Hell to the extent of seventy years’ distance.

Minor sins are forgiven if certain voluntary fasting are performed.

For example, those who fasted on the day of Arafah will have his minor sins forgiven from past years and next years.

Voluntary fasting are way to earn love of Allah

عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ” إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ قَالَ: مَنْ عَادَى لِي وَلِيًّا، فَقَدْ آذَنْتُهُ بِالْحَرْبِ، وَمَا تَقَرَّبَ إِلَيَّ عَبْدِي بِشَيْءٍ أَحَبَّ إِلَيَّ مِمَّا افْتَرَضْتُ عَلَيْهِ، وَمَا يَزَالُ عَبْدِي يَتَقَرَّبُ إِلَيَّ بِالنَّوَافِلِ حَتَّى أُحِبَّهُ، فَإِذَا أَحْبَبْتُهُ، كُنْتُ سَمْعَهُ الَّذِي يَسْمَعُ بِهِ، وَبَصَرَهُ الَّذِي يُبْصِرُ بِهِ، وَيَدَهُ الَّتِي يَبْطِشُ بِهَا، وَرِجْلَهُ الَّتِي يَمْشِي بِهَا، وَإِنْ سَأَلَنِي لَأُعْطِيَنَّهُ، وَلَئِنْ اسْتَعَاذَنِي لَأُعِيذَنَّهُ، وَمَا تَرَدَّدْتُ عَنْ شَيْءٍ أَنَا فَاعِلُهُ تَرَدُّدِي عَنْ نَفْسِ عَبْدِي الْمُؤْمِنِ، يَكْرَهُ الْمَوْتَ وَأَنَا أَكْرَهُ مَسَاءَتَهُ”

On the authority of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:Allah (mighty and sublime be He) said: Whosoever shows enmity to someone devoted to Me, I shall be at war with him. My servant draws not near to Me with anything more loved by Me than the religious duties I have enjoined upon him, and My servant continues to draw near to Me with supererogatory works so that I shall love him. When I love him I am his hearing with which he hears, his seeing with which he sees, his hand with which he strikes and his foot with which he walks. Were he to ask [something] of Me, I would surely give it to him, and were he to ask Me for refuge, I would surely grant him it. I do not hesitate about anything as much as I hesitate about [seizing] the soul of My faithful servant: he hates death and I hate hurting him. It was related by al-Bukhari.

Eid prayers

Before Eid prayers, it is important that one should try to follow these sunnah and mustahabb acts.

Taking Ghusl

It is recommended for Muslims to perform ghusl for the Eid prayers.

Yahya related to me from Malik from Nafi that Abdullah ibn Umar used to do ghusl on the day of Fitr before going to the place of prayer.

Imam Malik Muwetta (Chapter of Eids)

Wearing best clothing and applying perfume (Only for men)

It is a noble manner to wear the best clothing and as well as adorning oneself with perfume. This is only for men, as about the women, they should not do that, especially when coming out for Eid prayer, as this can lead to fitnah.

Eating odd numbers of dates in Fitr before going for the prayer, and not eating in Adha until the prayer is performed.

In Fitr day, it is sunnah to eat odd numbers of dates before going for prayer, and in Adha, it is sunnah to not eat until one has performed the prayer. This is reported in hadith.

Abdullah bin Buraidah narrated from his father:

“The Prophet would not leave on the Day of Fitr until he ate, and he would not eat on the day of Adha until he prayed.”

Saying Takbeer when one leaves the house until the imam comes.

It is greatest sunnah, as Allah mentions in the Quran

(He wants that you) must complete the same number (of days), and that you must magnify Allaah [i.e. to say Takbeer (Allaahu Akbar: Allaah is the Greatest)] for having guided you so that you may be grateful to Him

Surah Baqarah 185

The Salaf used to recite the Tabkeer after leaving their houses to the prayer areas until the Imam came. As for the Eid ul Adha, the scholars said the takbeer starts in first day of Dhul-Hijjah until sunset on last day of Tashraaq

The takbeer are:

Allaahu akbar, Allaahu akbar, laa ilaaha ill-Allaah, Allaahu akbar, Allaahu akbar, wa Lillaahi’l-hamd

Now about the Eid prayers.

How to perform Eid prayers

The eid prayer is similar to that of normal prayer, but there are few parts included.

Starting the prayer with the Opening Takbeer

The eid prayer should be opened as that of normal prayer, with Opening Takbeer (Allah Akbar)

Mulitpies Takbeers will be recited, before reciting the Quran in both rakats.

The Takbeer in first rakat is to be recited 7 times, while in 2nd rakat it is 5 times. as reported in ahadith:

‘Abdur-Rahman bin Sa’d bin ‘Ammar bin Sa’d, the Mu’adhdhin of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), narrated from his father, from his father, from his grandfather, that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to say the Takbir in the ‘Eid prayer, seven times in the first (Rak’ah) before reciting Qur’an, and five times in the second before reciting Qur’an.

Ibn Majah 1277

The hands will be raised for each takbeer.

After the Takbeer is recited, the surah fatiha should be recited, as it is still pillar of the prayer. then recite these sunnah surah.

It is sunnah to recite these surahs according to Prophet peace be upon him.

An-Nu’man bin Bashir narrated:

“For the two Eid and the Friday prayer, the Prophet (peace be upon him) would recite: Glorify the Name of Your Lord, the Most High, and Has there come to you the narration of the overwhelming?”

Tirmidhi 533

These are Surah Al-A’la and Surah Al-Ghashiyah. In book, Imam Tirmidhi, also mentioned from this hadith that the Prophet peace be upon him used to recite Surah Qaf and Al-Qamar. Other hadith about it.

It was narrated that ‘Ubaidullah bin ‘Abdullah said:“Umar went out on the day of ‘Eid and sent word to Abu Waqid Al-Laithi asking what the Prophet (ﷺ) used to recite on this day. He said: ‘Qaf [Qaf (50)] and ‘Iqtarabat’.” [Al-Qamar (54)]

Ibn Majah 1282

The rest of the prayer will be then performed as the normal prayer would be performed.

Is Eid prayer obligatory?

The scholars have different opinions regarding it including the Four Imams.

Imam Shafi (may Allah have mercy on him) and Imam Malik (May Allah have mercy on him) are of the view that Eid prayer is confirmed Sunnah (Sunnah Mu’akkadah).

Imam Ahmad (may Allah have mercy on him) was of the view that the Eid prayer is communal obligation, Imam Abu Hanifah (may Allah have mercy on him) said that Eid prayer is duty of the Muslims and obligatory for men.

The more correct view is that it is obligatory for men to come to Eid prayers, unless given valid excuses. It is not obligatory for the women to perform Eid prayer, but it is sunnah. as reported in the hadith.

Umm ‘Atiyya reported:

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) commanded us to bring out on’Id-ul-Fitr and ‘Id-ul-Adha young women, menstruating women and screened away ladies, menstruating women kept back from prayer, but participated in goodness and supplication of the Muslims. I said: Messenger of Allah, one of us does not have an outer garment (to cover her face and body). He said: Let her sister cover her with her outer garment.

Sahih Muslim 890 c

Witr prayers

Witr is great sunnah prayers which should never be skipped, it is mustahhab to perform it at end of the night, if one feels that he can able to wake up for that. But if he fears he may not wake up, then witr can be performed after Isha before sleeping. If one suddenly wakes up at Tahajjud time after he has performed witr, then witr is not to be performed in that case.

The mininum number of Witr is one rakat according to Muslim 752a. But 3 rakats is better.

There are two ways of performing Witr prayers.

  1. Performing Witr without sitting for 1st tashahhudd unlike in Maghrib. Instead one gets up for 3rd rakats. The Tashahudd will be only in 3rd rakat.
  2. Performing two rakats with 1 rakat seperated. This is done by finishing the 2nd rakats with Tashahhud and then salam, then get up and perform for 1st rakat.

These are mentioned from the ahadith

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used not to say the tasleem in the (first) two rakahs of Witr. According to another version: “He used to pray Witr with three rak’ahs and he did not sit except in the last of them.”

Narrated by al-Nasaa’i, 3/234; al-Bayhaqi, 3/31. al-Nawawi said in al-Majmoo’ (4/7): it was narrated by al-Nasaa’i with a hasan isnaad, and by al-Bayhaqi with a saheeh isnaad.

Ibn ‘Umar (may Allaah be pleased with him), used to separate the two rak’ahs from the single rak’ah with a tasleem, and he said that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to do that.

Narrated by Ibn Hibbaan (2435); Ibn Hajar said in al-Fath (2/482): its isnaad is qawiy (strong).

Witr prayers with more than 3 rakat

If one wishes to perform witr with more than 3 rakats, like 5 or 7 rakats, then the prayer must be in continous and the tashahhud and salam will be in the last rakat instead.

‘A’isha reported:

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to observe thirteen rak’ahs of the night prayer. Five out of them consisted of Witr, and he did not sit, but at the end (for salutation).

Sahih Muslim 737 a

If it is 9 rakat, it should be also continuous, and one should sit in the 8th rakat for Tashahhud, without saying salam, then recite tashahud and say salam in the 9th rakat. If he wants to perform 11 rakat, then, he should end the 9th rakat with tasleem first, then perform two rakat.

Mother of the Faithful (Hazrat Aisha), inform me about the Witr of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). She said: I used to prepare tooth stick for him and water for his ablution, and Allah would rouse him to the extent He wished during the night. He would use the tooth stick, and perform ablution, and would offer nine rak’ahs, and would not sit but in the eighth one and would remember Allah, and praise Him and supplicate Him, then he would get up without uttering the salutation and pray the ninth rak’ah. He would then sit, remember, praise Him and supplicate Him and then utter a salutation loud enough for us to hear. He would then pray two rak’ahs sitting after uttering the salutation, and that made eleven rak’ahs.

It is sunnah to recite these surah, in different rakat.

Surah al-A’la in first rakat

Surah Kafiroon in second rakat

Surah Ikhlas in third rakat

Sa’eed bin ‘Abdur-Rahman bin Abza narrated from his father, that:Ubayy bin Ka’b said: “The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to recite in Witr: “Glorify the Name of your Lord, the Most High;” and “Say: O you disbelievers!;’ and ‘Say: He is Allah, (the) One.’ And when he said the salam, he would say: Subhanal-Malikil-Quddus (Glory be to the Sovereign, the Most Holy) three times.”

Sunan an-Nasa’i 1729

It is also sunnah to recite Subhanal-Malikil-Quddus after the saluation as mentioned in this hadith.


Qunoot is dua recited after bowing in last rakat of witr. but during it before bowing, is fine.

It can be also said in obligatory prayers after standing up from ruku in the last rakat, when one faces calamity. But the qunoot should be made with what is appropriate for the calamity not the actual dua of qunoot.

The duas which Prophet peace be upon him taught hazrat Hussain bin Ali, is:

Allahumma ihdini fiman hadayta wa ‘afini fiman afayta wa tawallani fiman tawallayta wa barik li fima a’tayta, wa qini sharra ma qadayta, fa innaka taqdi wa la yuqda ‘alayk, wa innahu la yadhilluman walayta, tabarakta Rabbana wa at’alayt


O Allah, guide me among those whom You have guided, pardon me among those You have pardoned, turn to me in friendship among those on whom You have turned in friendship, and bless me in what You have bestowed, and save me from the evil of what You have decreed. For verily You decree and none can influence You; and he is not humiliated whom You have befriended. Blessed are You, O Lord, and Exalted.


اللَّهُمَّ اهْدِنِي فِيمَنْ هَدَيْتَ وَعَافِنِي فِيمَنْ عَافَيْتَ وَتَوَلَّنِي فِيمَنْ تَوَلَّيْتَ وَبَارِكْ لِي فِيمَا أَعْطَيْتَ وَقِنِي شَرَّ مَا قَضَيْتَ إِنَّكَ تَقْضِي وَلاَ يُقْضَى عَلَيْكَ وَإِنَّهُ لاَ يَذِلُّ مَنْ وَالَيْتَ تَبَارَكْتَ رَبَّنَا وَتَعَالَيْتَ

Sunan an-Nasa’i 1745

Another version, Hazrat Ali reported:

Allahumma inni a’udhu biridaka min sakhatika, wa a’udhu bimu’afatika min ‘uqubatika, wa a’udhu bika minka, la uhsi thana’an ‘alaika, Anta kama athnaita ‘ala nafsika


O Allah, I seek refuge in Your pleasure from Your wrath, and I seek refuge in Your forgiveness from your punishment, and I seek refuge in You from You. I cannot enumerate Your praise, You are as You have praised Yourself


اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِرِضَاكَ مِنْ سُخْطِكَ وَأَعُوذُ بِمُعَافَاتِكَ مِنْ عُقُوبَتِكَ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْكَ لاَ أُحْصِي ثَنَاءً عَلَيْكَ أَنْتَ كَمَا أَثْنَيْتَ عَلَى نَفْسِكَ

Ibn Majah 1179

Then the blessing should be sent upon Prophet peace be upon him at the end of the Qunoot.


Janaza prayer is funeral prayer that is performed, when one has passed away. It is prescibed, and highly recommended act.

Narrated Abu Huraira:

Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said, “(A believer) who accompanies the funeral procession of a Muslim out of sincere faith and hoping to attain Allah’s reward and remains with it till the funeral prayer is offered and the burial ceremonies are over, he will return with a reward of two Qirats. Each Qirat is like the size of the (Mount) Uhud. He who offers the funeral prayer only and returns before the burial, will return with the reward of one Qirat only.”

Sahih al-Bukhari 47

Janaza is Fard Kifayah, which means that it is obligatory if no one performs the prayer, and the community is sinful, if they do not perform it. But if few Muslims performs it, then it’s not obligatory, but it is still better to perform.

There is no bowing and prostration, only the standing form.

How to perform Janaza

Start the prayer with Opening Tabkeer

There are 4 takbeers in the prayer.

First Takbeer will then be recited to start the prayer, like in normal prayer.

Seek refuge with Allah from shaitan the ascursed, and recite Surah Fatiha.

Surah Fatiha will be recited after the seeking refuge with Allah, then it will be followed by some surah or small ayats.

Recite second Takbeer, and then recite Durood-e-Ibrahim as recited at end of the normal prayer.

The second Takbeer will then be recited, and the Durood will be recited.

Then recite third Takbeer, and make dua for the deceased Muslim.

The dua is:

Allahummaghfir lihayyina wa mayyitina, wa shahidina wa gha’ibina, wa saghirina wa kabirina, wa dhakarina wa unthana. Allahumma man ahyaitahu minna faahyihi ‘alal-Islam, wa man tawaffaytahu minna fa tawaffahu ‘alal- iman. Allahumma la tahrimna ajrahu wa la tudillana ba’dah.


O Allah, forgive our living and our dead, those who are present and those who are absent, our young and our old, our males and our females. O Allah, whomever of us You cause to live, let him live in Islam, and whomever of us You cause to die, let him die in (a state of) faith. O Allah, do not deprive us of his reward, and do not let us go astray after him

In Arabic:

اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِحَيِّنَا وَمَيِّتِنَا وَشَاهِدِنَا وَغَائِبِنَا وَصَغِيرِنَا وَكَبِيرِنَا وَذَكَرِنَا وَأُنْثَانَا اللَّهُمَّ مَنْ أَحْيَيْتَهُ مِنَّا فَأَحْيِهِ عَلَى الإِسْلاَمِ وَمَنْ تَوَفَّيْتَهُ مِنَّا فَتَوَفَّهُ عَلَى الإِيمَانِ اللَّهُمَّ لاَ تَحْرِمْنَا أَجْرَهُ وَلاَ تُضِلَّنَا بَعْدَهُ

Ibn Majah 1498

The final Takbeer will then be recited, and there should be small pause.

After the fourth takbeer, and the pause. The prayer will be finished with one Tasleem on right side. (saying Assalam alaikum wa rahamtullah)

Prostration of Forgetfulness

Prostration of Forgetfulness (known as Sajda Sahw) is a prescibed act that is done when the Muslim makes mistakes in salat due to their forgetness, or he feels doubtful about how many rakats he has performed.

It is two prostrations, exactly like the normal prostration. saying Takbir, and Subhaana Rabbiyal-A’la (Glory be to my Lord the Most High), while in the prostration, and Rabb ighfir li, Rabb ighfir li (Lord forgive me, Lord forgive) while in the sitting between two prostrations.

There is no Tashahhud involved in it.

Depending on the situtations. there are two cases of the Prostration of Forgetfulness.

  1. After Tasleem
  2. Before Tasleem

When should the Prostration of Forgetfulness after Tasleem be performed?

Praying extra parts of salat unintentionally

If one did this intentionally such as standing, sitting, bowing and prostration, his prayer is invalid, but If he did it out of mistake and he realizes this, then he should perform Prostration of Forgetfulness after the Tasleem, if he remember that he is doing addition out of mistake, he should leave that addition, contiune the prayer, give salutation and then do prostration of forgetfulness.

But if he remembered after long time like 30 mins later, then he has to repeat his salah.

This is reported in hadith.

Narrated’ `Abdullah:

Once Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) offered five rak`at in the Zuhr prayer, and somebody asked him whether there was some increase in the prayer. Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said, “What is that?” He said, “You have offered five rak`at.” So Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) performed two prostrations of Sahu after Taslim.

Sahih Bukhari 1226

Giving salutation in prayer with more than second rakats, before the final rakat. (Zuhr, Asr, Isha, and Maghrib)

If the salutation is given in this case intentionally, then the prayer has become invalid and needs to be repeated. But if it was by accident, and he remembered this after a short time, or was reminded by someone, then he should make up the missed rakats, then give salam and then do the prostration of forgetfulness and give salam again.

If he remember that he was giving tasleem before the end by mistake. Similar to the extra part, he should also stop doing this addition, contiune the prayer, give tasleem and then perform prostration of forgetfulness.

If he did not remember this until after long time, then salat needs to be repeated…

It was narrated from Ibn ‘Umar

That the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) forgot and said the Taslim after two Rak’ah. A man who was called Dhul-Yadain said to him:‘O Messenger of Allah, has the prayer been shortened or did you forget?’ He said: ‘It has not been shortened and I did not forget.’ He said: ‘But you prayed two Rak’ah.’ He said: ‘Is what Dhul-Yadain says true?’ They said: ‘Yes.’ So he went forward and performed two Rak’ah and said the Salam, then he prostrated twice for prostrations of forgetfulness.

Ibn Majah 1213

It was narrated from ‘Imran bin Husain that:

The Prophet (ﷺ) prayed three (rak’ahs) then said the taslim. Al-Khirbaq said: “You prayed three.” So he led them in praying the remaining rak’ah, then he said the taslim, then he did the two prostrations of forgetfulness, then he said the taslim (again).

Sunan an-Nasa’i 1331

When there is doubt about how many rakats ,one has made and then one of two possbilites in his mind is heavier, and follows that.

When one feels doubtful how many rakats he has performed in his prayer, so if he makes judgment, and one of two possibilites is morely likely and closer in his mind. he should go ahead for that, then give salam, and prostration of forgetfulness after the salam.

Prophet peace be upon him said:

if anyone of you is uncertain about the prayer, let him do what is closest to what is correct, then complete the prayer, say the Salam, and prostrate twice.”

Ibn Majah 1211

Leaving a Pillar of Salat (except the opening Tabkir)

The opening Tabkir is not included as excuse for sajda nahw, because the prayer has not been started whether if one did not say it intentionally or unintentionally

The parts of Salah such as bowing, prostrations are considered as pillars, so if one misses them intentionally, the prayer has become invalid.

If he misses any of them unintentionally and he remember it when he has reached the missed part in the next rakat. The present rakat he reached will then replace the previous rakat, and he should go build this to comptele his prayer, then give salam, and then do prostration of forgetfulness and give saluation again.

If he did not reach the place in the next rakat, and he remembers the missed part before reaching the next one in rakat, he should go back to it, perform it and then the part next after it, as to build it, then perform prostration of forgetfulness after the salam.

If he remembered the missed pillar after Tasleem, and this occured in the last rakat, he should go back to the pillar, comptele it, then do salam and prostration of forgetfulness,

But if the omission was not in the last rakat, then he should comptele the rakat, then tasleem and do prostration of forgetfulness

Obligatory part of Salat (example Tashahudd)

If the one starts to move up, but before reaching the next part, for example missing the first tashahudd, and before reaching the standing full form. he should return to the tashhudd, perform it, then go ahead continuing the prayer, then after the salam, perform prostration of forgetfulness.

Prostration of the Forgetfulness before Salutation

Missing Obligatory parts of Salat

If one misses an obligatory part such as the Tashahhud intentionally, his prayer is invalid, but if he did out of forgetfulness and he reached the next part completely, he doesn’t have to go back to the missed part. Instead, he should continue the prayer, then perform the prostration of forgetfulness before the salutation.

If he had the determination to move, but did not move up, and instead have done tashahudd, he doesn’t have to do sajda sahw.

Narrated `Abdullah bin Buhaina Al-Asdi:

(the ally of Bani `Abdul Muttalib) Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) stood up for the Zuhr prayer and he should have sat (after the second rak`a but he stood up for the third rak`a without sitting for Tashah-hud) and when he finished the prayer he performed two prostrations and said Takbir on each prostration while sitting, before ending (the prayer) with Taslim; and the people too performed the two prostrations with him instead of the sitting he forgot.

Sahih al-Bukhari 1230

Whenever one is doubtful about how many rakats he has performed and neither of two possibilites is heavier.

Prophet peace be upon him told us –

When any one of you is in doubt about his prayer and he does not know how much he has prayed, three or four (rak’ahs). he should cast aside his doubt and base his prayer on what he is sure of. then perform two prostrations before giving salutations. If he has prayed five rak’ahs, they will make his prayer an even number for him, and if he has prayed exactly four, they will be humiliation for the devil.

Sahih Muslim 571 a

Prostration of Forgetfulness for the Imam and his followers.

It is obligatory for the followers to follow the Imam and not differ with him, including prostration of forgetfulness. Because Prophet peace be upon him said:

“The Imam is (appointed) to be followed. So do not differ from him, bow when he bows, and say, “Rabbana-lakal hamd” if he says “Sami`a l-lahu liman hamidah”; and if he prostrates, prostrate (after him)

Sahih al-Bukhari 722

If the Imam gives salutation before the completion of the salat, and he realized this mistake, and stands up to make the missed parts, the followers must follow him.

If the follower makes a mistake, the imam bears this mistake for him.

So if the imam makes mistake, it is obligatory for the followers to follow him in his performance of prostration of forgetfulness, except for those who arrived late.

Because in the hadith of Prophet peace be upon him forgetting the Tashahud, the Companions left the tashahhud when Prophet peace be upon him forget it, and they did not differ with him as to avoid going against his order.

Any follower who arrived late and need to make up the missed parts, should not follow the Imam in his performance of prostration of forgetfulness, instead, he should make up the missed parts, by standing up for it, then give the salutation, and do the prostration of forgetfulness, then salam again.

So if the late follower while praying behind the Imam or making up the missed parts made a mistake, he should perform the prostration of forgetfulness after he completed the missed parts. This prostration is either before or after salaam depending on the situation.

If he forget to say Subhan Rabi ul Azeem, while in Rukoo, but did not miss any of actions in his prayer, no prostration is needed. If one or more rakats is missed, he must make them up and perform prostration of forgetfulness before salutation.

Mocking Islam

All aspects of Islam, that were revealed by Allah and His Messenger, according to Quran and Sunnah, such as Shariah laws, acts of worship, family, marriage etc, must be respected. We should believe that Allah is All-Wise, and whatever He has commanded us, we should respect Him, even if we cannot understand it fully due to our limited mind.

Unfortuntaly, these days, some of the Muslims especially youths, ends up mocking Islam, and this is common in social medias aswell, such as TikTok. This is very serious matter, that they are taking lightly.

Undoubtedly, mocking Islam, etc sunnah of Prophet peace be upon him, is actually kufr that puts one out of pale of Islam. We see that some Muslims mock beards, hijabs etc..

Allah says in Quran:

وَلَئِن سَأَلْتَهُمْ لَيَقُولُنَّ إِنَّمَا كُنَّا نَخُوضُ وَنَلْعَبُ ۚ قُلْ أَبِٱللَّهِ وَءَايَـٰتِهِۦ وَرَسُولِهِۦ كُنتُمْ تَسْتَهْزِءُونَ

If you ask them (about this), they declare: “We were only talking idly and joking.” Say: “Was it at Allâh (عز وجل), and His Ayât (proofs, evidence, verses, lessons, signs, revelations) and His Messenger (صلى الله عليه وسلم) that you were mocking?”

لَا تَعْتَذِرُوا۟ قَدْ كَفَرْتُم بَعْدَ إِيمَـٰنِكُمْ ۚ إِن نَّعْفُ عَن طَآئِفَةٍۢ مِّنكُمْ نُعَذِّبْ طَآئِفَةًۢ بِأَنَّهُمْ كَانُوا۟ مُجْرِمِينَ

Make no excuse; you disbelieved after you had believed. If We pardon some of you, We will punish others amongst you because they were Mujrimûn (disbelievers, polytheists, sinners, criminals.).

Surah At-Tawbah 9:65-6

Imam Ibn Kathir wrote on this verse:

Abdullah bin Umar said, “During the battle of Tabuk, a man was sitting in a gathering and said, “I have never seen like these reciters of ours! They have the hungeriest stomaches, the most lying tongues and are the most cowardice in battle.’ A man in the Masjid said, “You lie. You are a hypocrite, and I will surely inform the Messenger of Allah (Peace be upon him).” This statement was conveyed to the Messenger of Allah, and also a part of Qur’an was revealed about it.”” Abdullah Ibn Umar said, “I have seen that man aftwards holding onto the shoulders of Messenger’s camel while stones were falling on him, declaring “O Allah’s Messenger! We were only engaged in idle talk and jesting,’ while Messenger of Allah was reciting (The verses)

Therefore we need to be very careful regarding our deen. We should never make jokes about it. Parents must teach their children to show respect to their deen and not look down on it.

Committing blasphemy against Allah and His Messenger, is unfortunately taken lightly, and the people who mock the religion are not realizing the gravity.

PDA (Public Display of Affection)


PDA (Public display of Affection) is a vulgar culture, it is based on Western. yet it also took place among Muslims. Mostly, the married couples are seen hugging each other, holding hands in front of people… It is also still common in Social media as well…

It is very against modesty, and aswell it is contrary to protective jealousy of man.

It is the duty of a Muslim man to protect the honor of his wife, and he should make sure that she does not fall into any dangers.

Allah says in Quran

ٱلرِّجَالُ قَوَّٰمُونَ عَلَى ٱلنِّسَآءِ بِمَا فَضَّلَ ٱللَّهُ بَعۡضَهُمۡ عَلَىٰ بَعۡضٍ وَبِمَآ أَنفَقُواْ مِنۡ أَمۡوَٰلِهِمۡۚ فَٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتُ قَٰنِتَٰتٌ حَٰفِظَٰتٌ لِّلۡغَيۡبِ بِمَا حَفِظَ ٱللَّهُۚ

Men are in charge of women by [right of] what Allah has given one over the other and what they spend [for maintenance] from their wealth. So righteous women are devoutly obedient, guarding in [the husband’s] absence what Allah would have them, guard.

Therefore it is completely against Allah’s command that man should practice PDA with his wife.

Modesty is of great importance. It is reported in ahadith:

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that:

The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “Faith has seventy odd branches and modesty (Al-Haya’) is a branch of faith.”

Sunan an-Nasa’i 5004

Narrated Abu Mas`ud:

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, ‘One of the sayings of the early Prophets which the people have got is: If you don’t feel ashamed, do whatever you like.”

Sahih al-Bukhari 6120

And it is also important that the man should also protect his wife’s honor, that he should have protective jealousy over her, and not allow any strangers to touch her.

Abu Huraira (Allah be pleased with him) reported that Sa’d b. Ubada (Allah be pleased with him) said:

Messenger of Allah, if I were to find with my wife a man, should I not touch him before bringing four witnesses? Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said: Yes. He said: By no means. By Him Who has sent you with the Truth, I would hasten with my sword to him before that. Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said: Listen to what your chief says. He is jealous of his honor, I am more jealous than he (is) and God is more jealous than I.

Sahih Muslim 1498 c

See how Hazrat Sa’d b Ubadah’s jealousy toward his wife was! Yet today, we come across many pictures of Muslim couples showing affection, holding hands, hugging, etc… This is not good.

Moreover, not only it also affects the honor of the couples, but it could lead to evil eyes as well. Many of our brothers and sisters are unmarried, even at older ages, and are still struggling to find spouses. So if they were to see what the married couples are doing in public, they would grow more depressed and feel hatred and envious toward those.

So, therefore, you must avoid displaying affection with your spouses publicly. Do it in private, don’t follow the kafirs’ way. Follow the Prophet peace be upon him and his companions, for they had best Ghayrah..

Salat the 2nd pillar of Islam after Shahadah, is one of the most important acts of worship, as it is a conversation with Allah, the Supreme Creator, Lord of the Worlds. There are 5 daily prayers with Jumma every Friday.

One of the most important conditions required for successful salat is Khusu, which is spiritual concentration. During the prayer, the Muslim humbles himself before Allah, acknowledging that he depends on Allah, Who is the Independent Being and does not need anything from him, thus he expresses his poverty. He only focuses on Him leaving all worldly thoughts.

Unfortunately, there are many Muslims who do not pray with khushoo, feel lazy, and unwilling to pray. Some do not have humility, and instead, rush to finish it.

May Allah forgive me if I have erred in any matter and may He makes this article beneficial for all of my brothers and sisters and me.

What is Khushoo?

Khushoo is an Arabic word referring to humility, humbleness, and calmness. In Salat, the khushoo is spiritual concentration, to which a Muslim leaves all worldly thoughts and needs, and put all focus on Allah alone. Submitting to Him, feeling fearful of Him from his body and heart.

Allah tells us that the successful believers are among those who submit themselves fully to Him, in their salats.

قَدۡ أَفۡلَحَ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنُونَ

Certainly, will the believers have succeeded

ٱلَّذِينَ هُمۡ فِى صَلَاتِهِمۡ خَٰشِعُونَ

They who are during their prayer humbly submissive

Surah Mu’minun 1-2

Hazrat Qayyim said regarding khusu

“The khushoo’ of true faith is when the heart feels aware and humble before the greatness and glory of Allah, and is filled with awe, fear, and shyness so that the heart is utterly humbled before Allah and broken, as it were, with fear, shyness, love and the recognition of the blessings of Allah and its own sins. So no doubt the khushoo’ of the heart is followed by the khushoo’ of the body. . (Al-Rooh, p. 314)

The rewards of your salat depends on your khushoo.

It is important that you focus on having as maximum khushoo as possible. It is reported in different ahadith.

“A slave may pray and have nothing recorded for it except a tenth of it, or a ninth, or an eighth, or a seventh, or a sixth, or a fifth, or a quarter, or a third, or a half.

”(Reported by Imaam Ahmad; Saheeh al-Jaami‟, 1626).

Hazrat Ibn Abbas said regarding the khushoo

“You will only have from your prayer that which you focused on.”

and Prophet peace be upon him also said

“When a slave stands and prays, all his sins are brought and placed on his head and shoulders. Every time he bows or prostrates, some of them fall from him.”

Happiness is earned in Salat with full khushoo…

“The Messenger of Allah said: ‘In this world, women and perfume have been made dear to me, and my comfort has been provided in prayer.'”

Sunan an-Nasa’i 3939

How does one get khushoo?

There are many ways of getting Khushoo:

1. See yourself as a slave of Allah, and be certain that you will meet Him.

First, the Muslim should acknowledge that he depends on Allah alone and that he will meet Him on Day of Judgement. We will be accountable for all of our deeds we have done, good or bad. This includes our prayers.

He should know that this worldly life is only temporary and that Hereafter is real and eternal. He should remind himself of this verse.

وَمَا خَلَقۡتُ ٱلۡجِنَّ وَٱلۡإِنسَ إِلَّا لِيَعۡبُدُونِ

“And I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me”

Surah Adh-Dhariyat 56

2. Repeat what the Mu‘adh-dhin says:

It is sunnah to repeat what the Mu’adh-dhin.

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: When the Mu’adhdhin says: Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, and one of you should make this response: Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest; (and when the Mu’adhdhin) says: I testify that there is no god but Allah, one should respond: I testify that there is no god but Allah, and when he says: I testify that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, one should make a response: I testify that Muhammad is Allah’s Messenger. When he (the Mu’adhdhin) says: Come to prayer, one should make a response: There is no might and no power except with Allah. When he (the Mu’adhdhin) says: Come to salvation, one should respond: There is no might and no power except with Allah, and when he (the Mu’adhdhin) says: Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, then make a response: Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest. When he (the Mu’adhdhin) says: There is no god but Allah, and he who makes a response from the heart: There is no god but Allah, he will enter Paradise.

Sahih Muslim 385

I heard Muawiya bin Abi Sufyan (repeating the statements of the Adhan) while he was sitting on the pulpit. When the Mu’adh-dhin pronounced the Adhan saying, “Allahu-Akbar, Allahu Akbar”, Muawiya said: “Allah Akbar, Allahu Akbar.” And when the Mu’adh-dhin said, “Ash-hadu an la ilaha illal-lah (I testify that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah)”, Muawiya said, “And (so do) I”. When he said, “Ash-hadu anna Muhammadan Rasulullah” (I testify that Muhammad is Allah’s Apostle), Muawiya said, “And (so do) I”. When the Adhan was finished, Muawiya said, “O people, when the Mu’adh-dhin pronounced the Adhan I heard Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) on this very pulpit saying what you have just heard me saying”.

Sahih Bukhari 914

These are very beneficial, for they keep you prepared for the prayer, as you are going to meet your Creator, which then will give you khushoo. In sha Allah.

3. Recite the supplication after making your wudu.

“Ash-hadu an la ilaha ill-Allahu wahdahu la sharikha lahu, wa ash hadu, anna Muhammadan ‘abduhu wa Rasuluhu”

“I testify that there is no one worthy of worship but Allah, He is Alone and has no partner and Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.”

“Allahumma aj’alni minat-tawwabina waj’alni minAI-mutatahhrina”

“Oh, Allah! include me among those who repent and those who keep themselves pure.”

  Reference: Bulugh al-Maram 57

“Subhanaka Allah humma wa bihamdika, ashhadu anlaa ilaaha illa anta, astaghfiruka wa atoobu ilaik”  

“Glory be to You, O Allah, and praise; I bear witness that there is none worthy of worship but You, I seek Your forgiveness and turn to You in repentance.”

3. Use Miswak

It is one of the great sunnah, abandoned by many muslims in favor of toothbrush and toothpaste. Prophet peace be upon him stressed on the use of miswak.

Abu Hurairah narrated that :

Allah’s Messenger said: “If it were not that it would be difficult on my nation, then I would have ordered them to use the Siwak for each prayer.”

Jami` at-Tirmidhi 22

Abu Bakr as-Siddeeq said:

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: `The siwak is purifying for the mouth and pleasing to the Lord.”

Musnad Ahmad 62

4. Take your adornment (etc wear best clothing)

Whenever we are invited to meet the President or when there is a business talk going on, we would naturally try to take our best adornment we have right now, such as wearing luxurious suits, applying perfume, etc. But when it comes to meeting our Creator, we don’t really prepare ourselves, even in fajr, we would just pray in our pajama instead. We should try to prepare ourselves for salat, by wearing good clothing and perfumes only intended to seek Allah’s pleasure.

Allah says in Quran:

يَٰبَنِيٓ ءَادَمَ خُذُواْ زِينَتَكُمۡ عِندَ كُلِّ مَسۡجِدٍ

O Children of Adam, take your adornment at every masjid.

Surah A’raf 31

So therefore we should try our best to look good only for the pleasure of Allah.

5. Spending your time doing dhikr, and reading the Quran, and other beneficial acts.

Remembrance of Allah relaxes our hearts, even during times of hardship. We should try spending our time remembering Allah, such as Subhan Allah, (Allah is free from every error), Alhamdulillah (Praise be to Allah), La ilaha illallah (There is no god but Allah).

The Quran is the best Dikhr, which many people left reciting. When you read it, especially if you know Arabic, you will see that it has a beautiful theme, it tells you about who Allah is, how you worship Him, and living according to His laws, it warns you about the Day of Judgment, which can keep you feel humbled before Almighty Allah.

إِنَّا نَحۡنُ نَزَّلۡنَا ٱلذِّكۡرَ وَإِنَّا لَهُۥ لَحَٰفِظُونَ

Indeed, it is We Who sent down the Qur’an and indeed, We will be its guardian.

Surah Al-Hijr 9

We should stay away from useless activities that keep us stuck longer as these may take our khushoo away and our thoughts may become filled with such activities.

6. Start war against Shaytan the cursed.

Shaytan has promised that he will try to mislead Children of Adam

قَالَ فَبِمَآ أَغۡوَيۡتَنِى لَأَقۡعُدَنَّ لَهُمۡ صِرَٰطَكَ ٱلۡمُسۡتَقِيمَ

[Satan] said, “Because You have put me in error, I will surely sit in wait for them on Your straight path.

ثُمَّ لَأَتِيَنَّهُم مِّنۢ بَيْنِ أَيْدِيهِمْ وَمِنْ خَلْفِهِمْ وَعَنْ أَيْمَٰنِهِمْ وَعَن شَمَآئِلِهِمْۖ وَلَا تَجِدُ أَكْثَرَهُمْ شَٰكِرِينَ

Then I will come to them from before them and from behind them and on their right and on their left, and You will not find most of them grateful [to You].”

Surah Al-A’raf 17

And he will try his best to annoy us in salats by throwing out any thoughts and whisperings. So we should fight him.

It is sunnah to seek refuge with Allah from shaitan the outcasted when in salat before starting to recite Surah Fatiha.

7. Try to feel that you are in front of your Creator when praying to Him.

This is actually proven from the hadith.

Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) saw sputum on the wall of the mosque in the direction of the Qibla and scraped it off. He faced the people and said, “Whenever any one of you is praying, he should not spit in front of him because in the prayer Allah is in front of him.”

Sahih Bukhari 406 and Sahih Muslim 547 a

Therefore, you should pray as if you are in front of Allah, your Creator, Who does not need you, but it is you who needs Him most… Always try your best to stay humble and do not do foolish movements such as looking around, or up to the sky, fiddling with your beard and hair, looking at your watch, etc…

8. Pray as if it is your last prayer

Prophet peace be upon him gave us beautiful advice.

“A man came to the Prophet (ﷺ) and said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, teach me but make it concise.’ He said: ‘When you stand to pray, pray like a man bidding farewell. Do not say anything for which you will have to apologize. And give up hope for what other people have.’”

Sunan Ibn Majah 4171

9. Dont hasten the prayer

Often we get stressed or feel worried about some of our worldly works, thus we end up being hastily in the prayer. This is not acceptable.

Brothers, do you not realize that everything is controlled by Allah? why don’t you know that prayers are most important and bring you closer to Allah? Do you not realize that the worst of thieves are actually those who steal the prayers?

It is reported in ahadith

(Prophet peace be upon him said) “the worst of thieves is the one who steals his prayer.” They said, “How does he steal his prayer, Messenger of Allah?” He replied, “He does not do ruku or sajdah properly.”

Muawatta Imam Malik 406

“The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) forbade three things: Pecking like a crow, spreading (the forearms) like a beast of prey, and a man having a place in the mosque in which he usually offers the prayer, like a camel has a place to which it usually goes.”

Ibn Majah 1496

Abu Hurairah narrated:

“Allah’s Messenger entered the Masjid, and a man entered and offered Salat. Then he came to give Salam to the Propet. He returned the Salam to him and said: ‘Go back and perform Salat, for indeed you have not prayed.’ So the man returned to pray as he had prayed. Then he came to give Salam to the Prophet. He returned Salam to him, then [Allah’s Messenger] said: ‘Go back and perform Salat, for indeed you have not prayed’ until he had done that three times. So the man said to him: ‘By the One who sent you with the Truth, I do not know any better than this, so teach me.’ So he said [to him]: ‘When you stand for Salat then say the Takbir, then recite what is easy for you of the Quran. Then bow until you are at rest while bowing, then rise up until you are at rest sitting. Do that in all of your Salat.'”

Jami` at-Tirmidhi 303

10. Remember that Allah talks about you when you are reciting Surah Faitha.

It is one of the most beautiful part of Salat that your Creator talks about you… Subhan Allah…

It was said to Abu Huraira: At times we are behind the Imam. He said: Recite it inwardly, for he had heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) declare that Allah the Exalted had said: I have divided the prayer into two halves between Me and My servant, and My servant will receive what he asks.

When the servant says: Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the universe, Allah the Most High says: My servant has praised Me.

And when he (the servant) says: The Most Compassionate, the Merciful. Allah the Most High says: My servant has lauded Me.

And when he (the servant) says: Master of the Day of judgment, He remarks: My servant has glorified Me and sometimes He would say: My servant entrusted (his affairs) to Me.

And when he (the worshipper) says: Thee do we worship and of Thee do we ask help, He (Allah) says: This is between Me and My servant, and My servant will receive what he asks for.

Then, when he (the worshipper) says: Guide us to the straight path, the path of those to whom Thou hast been Gracious not of those who have incurred Thy displeasure, nor of those who have gone astray. He (Allah) says: This is for My servant, and My servant will receive what he asks for.

Sahih Muslim 395 a

11. Make small pause between the verses and reflect on its meaning.

It is sunnah to make a small pause between verses so that you reflect on its meaning which helps you to gain more khushoo. In sha Allah.

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to recite: “In the name of Allah, the Cherisher and Sustainer of the worlds; Most Gracious, Most Merciful; Master of the Day of Judgment,” breaking its recitation into verses, one after another.

12. Learn Arabic, the language of Quran

Quran was revealed in Arabic language. When one learns the language, he will find so much beautiful things about Quran. By explaining the Quran in another language, it’s no longer Quran. Allah says:

إِنَّآ أَنزَلۡنَٰهُ قُرۡءَٰنًا عَرَبِيًّا لَّعَلَّكُمۡ تَعۡقِلُونَ

Indeed, We have sent it down as an Arabic Qur’an that you might understand.

Surah Yusuf 2

The Salaf (3 generations of Islam, Prophet’s companions, then Tabien, and then Taba Tabien) used to enjoin the non-Arabs to learn Arabic.

Ubay ibn Ka’b (رضي الله عنه) said:
“Teach Arabic (i.e. Arabic grammar) like you teach the memorisation of the Qur’aan!”

Abu Bakr as-Sideeq (رضي الله عنه) said:
“That I recite and forget (a portion) is more beloved to me than to make a grammatical mistake!”

Umar ibn al-Khattab (رضي الله عنه) once passed by a group of archers who missed their targets. He reprimanded them, and they responded that they were only beginners, but they made a grammatical mistake in phrasing their response. He told them, “Verily, your mistakes in (Arabic) grammar are more difficult for me to bear than your mistakes in archery!”

(Quotes from Lughat al-Qur’aan by Abu Ubadah Ibrahim ibn Muhammad, pps 15-20)

‘Abdullaah bin Zayd An-Numayri reports that Al-Hasan Al-Basri said:

“They (the heretics) were destroyed by their inability in Arabic.”

Al-Bukhaari, At-Taareekh Al-Kabeer 5/99.

Al-Imaam Ash-Shaafi’i said:

“People didn’t become ignorant and didn’t differ amongst themselves except because they left Arabic and leaned towards the language of Aristotle.”

Quoted by As-Suyuti in Sawn Al-Mantiq p15.

As-Suyuti said on p22 of the same book:

“I have found that the Salaaf before Ash-Shaafi’i indicate what he did: that the cause of heresy is ignorance of the Arabic language.”

So according to the Salaf, those who are not native speaker of Arabic (including me) are obligated to learn the Arabic.

13. Memorize some of surahs especially the small one

These help you to learn more and to achieve full khushoo. For 2 rakats sunnah prayer, it is sunnah to recite Surah Kafiroon and then Ikhlaas.

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that in the two Rak’ah before the Fajr, the Prophet (ﷺ) used to recite:

“Say: ‘O you disbelievers!” [Al-Kafirun (109)] and “Say: Allah is One.” [Al-Ikhlas (112)]

By reflecting on these surahs, you reject all forms of kufr and shirks, and accept the Oneness of Allah, believing in His beautiful and Perfect attributes.

14. Straighten the rows.

This is most ignored obligatory command, Prophet peace be upon him commanded us to straighten rows. It is reported in ahadith.

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Straighten your rows as the straightening of rows is essential for perfect and correct prayer. “

Sahih al-Bukhari 723

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Straighten your rows or Allah will alter your faces.”

Sahih al-Bukhari 717

Prophet peace be upon him said that the shaitans enters the rows like small sheeps

“Make your rows solid and close together, and keep your necks in line. By the One in Whose Hand is the soul of Muhammad! I can see the shaitan entering through the gaps in the rows as if they are small sheep.”

Sunan an-Nasa’i 815

It is also a great sunnah for man to take the first row. As for the women, they should be in the last rows, to avoid any temptation.

Abu Hurairah narrated that:

Allah’s Messenger said: “The best rows for the men are the first of them, and the worst are the last of them. And the best rows for the women are the last of them, and the worst are the first of them.”

Jami` at-Tirmidhi 224

15. Say Ameen behind the Imam when he says the ameen too at the end of the Surah Fatiha.

“The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: ‘When the Imam says: Not (the way) of those who earned Your anger, nor of those who went astray, say: ‘Amin’ for the angels say Amin and the Imam says Amin, and if a person’s Amin coincides with the Amin of the angels, his previous sins will be forgiven.'”

Sunan an-Nasa’i 927

16. Say Rabbana Wa Laka hamd when the Imam says “Sami Allah liman Hamidah

Narrated Rifa’a bin Rafi Az-Zuraqi:

One day we were praying behind the Prophet. When he raised his head from bowing, he said, “Sami`a l-lahu liman hamidah.” A man behind him said, “Rabbana wa laka l-hamdu, hamdan kathiran taiyiban mubarakan fihi” (O our Lord! All the praises are for You, many good and blessed praises). When the Prophet completed the prayer, he asked, “Who has said these words?” The man replied, “I.” The Prophet said, “I saw over thirty angels competing to write it first.” Prophet rose (from bowing) and stood straight till all the vertebrae of his spinal column came to a natural position.

Sahih al-Bukhari 799

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that:

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “When the Imam says: ‘Sami Allahu liman hamidah (Allah hears the one who praises Him),’ then say: ‘Rabbana wa lakal-hamd,’ (Our Lord, and to You be the praise).’ Whoever says that and it coincides with the angels saying it, his previous sins will be forgiven.”

Sunan an-Nasa’i 1063

17. Repeat verses as to ponder on its meaning again and again.

The Prophet peace be upon him used to do this.

It was reported that he spent a night repeating one aayah until morning came. The ayah was (interpretation of the meaning): “If you punish them, they are Your slaves, and if You forgive them, verily You, only You are the All-Mighty, the All-Wise.”[al-Maa‟idah 5:118].

(Reported by Ibn Khuzaymah, 1/271 and Ahmad, 5/149; Sifat al-Salaah, p. 102)

18. Place the Sutrah

It is sunnah to place the sutrah infront of you, so that you don’t feel disturbed. Sutrah also prevents the people from crossing infront of you.

Narrated Sahl ibn Abu Hathmah:

The Prophet (ﷺ) said: When one of you prays facing a sutrah he should keep close to it, and not let the devil interrupt his prayer.

Sunan Abi Dawud 695

19. Place the right hand over your left hand in Qiyam position

Narrated Sahl bin Sa`d:

The people were ordered to place the right hand on the left forearm in the prayer. Abu Hazim said, “I knew that the order was from the Prophet (ﷺ) .”

Sahih al-Bukhari 740

According to the scholars, this is sign of humility.

Imam Ahmad (may Allah have mercy on him) was asked about the meaning of placing one hand on top of the other when standing in prayer. He said: “It is humility before the Almighty.”

(Al-Khushoo‟ fi‟l-Salaah by Ibn Rajab, p. 21).

Ibn Hajar (may Allah have mercy on him) said: “The „ulamaa‟ said: the meaning of this posture is that it is the attitude of the humble petitioner, it is more likely to prevent fidgeting, and it is more conducive to khushoo‟.”

(Fath al-Baari, 2/224).

20. Keep your gaze strict on the place of prostration

It was reported from Aa‟ishah that

“The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to pray with his head tilted forward and his gaze lowered, looking at the ground.”

(Reported by al-Haakim, 1/479. He said it is Saheeh according to the condition of the two Shaykhs [al-Bukhariand Muslim], and al-Albaani agreed with him in Sifat al-Salaah, p. 89)

21. Look at your index finger and keeping gaze on it, while moving it during Tashahudd.

This is one of the most ignored sunnah

It is reported in hadith:

then he (Prophet Peace be upon him) held two of his fingers together and made a circle, and raised his forefinger, and I saw him moving it and supplicating with it.”

Sunan an-Nasa’i 889

Abd Allah b. al-Zubair narrated the above-mentioned tradition on the authority of his father saying:

He (Prophet peace be upon him) kept his look fixed on the finger he was pointing.

Sunan Abi Dawud 990

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “It is more powerful against the Shaytan than iron”

(Reported by Imaam Ahmad, 2/119, with a hasan isnaad, as stated in Sifat al-Salaah, p. 159)

i.e., pointing with the forefinger during the Tashahhud is more painful to the Shaytan than being beaten with a rod of iron, because it reminds the slave of the Unity of Allah and to be sincere in his worship of Him alone, and this is what the Shaytan hates most; we seek refuge with Allah from him.”

(al-Fath al-Rabbani by al-Saa‟idi, 4/15).

22. Offer Sujood-Al-Tilaawah when you recite an Ayat of Prostration:

Umar bin Al-Khattab recited Surat-an-Nahl on a Friday on the pulpit and when he reached the verse of Sajda he got down from the pulpit and prostrated and the people also prostrated. The next Friday Umar bin Al-Khattab recited the same Sura and when he reached the verse of Sajda he said, “O people! When we recite the verses of Sajda (during the sermon) whoever prostrates does the right thing, yet it is no sin for the one who does not prostrate.” And Umar did not prostrate (that day). Added Ibn `Umar “Allah has not made the prostration of recitation compulsory but if we wish we can do it.”

Sahih al-Bukhari 1077

Abu Salama b. ‘Abual-Rahman reported:

Abu Huraira recited before them:” When the heaven burst asunder” (al-Qur’an 84:1) and performed prostration. After completing (the prayer) he informed them that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) has prostrated himself at it (this verse).

Sahih Muslim 578 a

It also annoys Shaitan, thus making his hold weak.

Abu Hurayrah said:

“The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “When the son of Adam recites a sajdah, the Shaytan goes away weeping, saying, “Woe to him! He was commanded to prostrate and he prostrated, so Paradise is his; I was ordered to prostrate and I disobeyed, so Hell is my fate!”

(Reported by Imaam Muslim in his Saheeh, no. 133) and Ibn Majah 1105

23. Understand how the Salaf prayed and how they had khushoo

The Salaf were the best generation, for their piety, beautiful manners, wisdoms and knowledge. It is important that we follow their footsteps so that we follow the Straight Path. They had such level of khushoo, that we could never be able to match. But still, we should try to follow their examples.

Mujaahid (may Allah have mercy on him) said: “When one of them stood in prayer, he would be too fearful of his Lord to allow his eyes to be drawn to anything, or to turn aside or to fidget by playing with pebbles or anything else or to think of any worldly matter, unless he forgot, during prayer.”

(Ta‟zeem Qadr al-Salaah, 1/188)

When Ibn al-Zubayr stood up to pray, he would be like a stick (i.e., immobile) with khushoo‟. Once he was prostrating when a missile from a catapult was launched at him, when Makkah was being besieged, and part ofhis garment was torn away whilst he was praying, and he did not even raise his head. Muslimah ibn Bashshaar was praying in the mosque when part of it collapsed, and the people got up [and fled], but he was praying and did not even notice. We have heard that one of them was like a garment thrown on the floor; one of them would end his prayer with the colour of his complexion changed because he had been standing before Allah. One of them would not know who was standing to his right or left when he prayed. One of them would go pale when he did wudoo‟ for prayer, and it was said to him, “We see that when you do wudoo‟ a change comes over you.” He said, “I know before Whom I am going to stand.” When the time for prayer came, „Ali ibn Abi Taalib would be visibly shaken, and the colour of his face would change. It was said to him, “What is the matter with you?‟ He said, “By Allah, there has come the time of the amaanah (trust) which Allahoffered to the heavens and the earth, and the mountains, but they declined tobear it and were afraid of it, but I bore it [cf. Al-Ahzaab 33:72].” When Sa‟eed al-Tanookhi prayed, there would be tears rolling down his cheeks onto his beard. We heard that one of the Taabi‟een, when he stood up to pray, his colour would change, and hewould say, “Do you know before Whom I am going to stand and with Whom I am going to talk?” Who among you has fear and respect like this?

24. If you have urge to relieve yourself, do so.

Because it can disturb your khushoo easily, thererfore you should relieve yourself first.

The Messenger of Allah forbade a man to perform prayer when he was suppressing (the urge to urinate or defecate).

Ibn Majah 617

25. Avoid praying when you feel sleepy.

When one is sleepy, he loses his awareness, and sometimes he may end up cursing himself accidentally. Therefore it is best to take a rest if you feel sleepy.

Allah’s Messenger said: “When one of you is sleepy and he is performing Salat, then let him lie down until the sleep is gone from him. For when one of you performs Salat while he is sleepy, perhaps he wants to seek forgiveness but he curses himself.”

Jami` at-Tirmidhi 355

26. If you feel hungry and a food has been served, eat it first before going for prayer.

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: When the supper is served to any one of you and the prayer also begins. (in such a case) first take supper, and do not make haste (for prayer) till you have (taken the food).

Sahih Muslim 559 a

27. Get rid of anything that could distract your khushoo.

Example, pictures, colorful decoration, TV.

It was narrated that ‘Aishah said:

“In my house there was a cloth on which were images, which I put in a niche of the house, and the Messenger of Allah [SAW] used to pray facing it. Then he said: ‘O ‘Aishah, take it away from me.’ So I took it down and made it into pillows.’

Sunan an-Nasa’i 5354

Any loud places such as people making alot of noises, arguing with each other must be avoided too.

28. Avoid praying on prayer mat with designs disturbing the khushoo and wearing garment with designs.

The Apostle of Allah (ﷺ) prayed in a garment which had designs over it, so he (the Holy Prophet) said: Take it to Abu Jahm and bring me a plain blanket from him, because its designs have distracted me.

Sahih Muslim 556 a

29. Don’t pray behind sleeping person or those talking.

Narrated Abdullah ibn Abbas:

The Prophet (ﷺ) said: Do not pray behind a sleeping or a talking person.

Although there is a hadith.

Narrated `Urwa:

The Prophet (ﷺ) prayed while Aisha was lying between him and his Qibla on the bed on which they used to sleep.

Sahih al-Bukhari 384

Some scholars among the Salaf thought it is makruh to pray behind a sleeping person because the person could expose something. But if there is no risk about it, then no problem in praying behind the person. Allah knows best.

30. Avoid smoothering the ground

Mu’aiqib reported the Prophet (ﷺ) as saying ;

Do not remove pebbles while you are praying; if you do it out of sheer necessity, do it only once to smooth the pebbles.

Sunan Abi Dawud 946

The reason is to keep maintainng the khushoo, by avoiding making extra movements.

31. Avoid distracting the people with your recitation.

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) retired to the mosque. He heard them (the people) reciting the Qur’an in a loud voice. He removed the curtain and said: Lo! every one of you is calling his Lord quietly. One should not trouble the other and one should not raise the voice in recitation or in prayer over the voice of the other.

Sunan Abi Dawud 1332

32. Avoid looking at the heaven and around.

‘A’ishah said:

I asked the Messenger of Allah(ﷺ) about looking to the sides during prayer. He said: It is something which the devil snatches from a servant’s prayers.

Sunan Abi Dawud 910

It was narrated that Anas bin Malik said:

“The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) led his Companions in prayer one day. When he had finished the prayer he turned to face the people and said: ‘What is wrong with some people that they lift their gaze to the heavens?’ He spoke severely concerning that: ‘They should certainly abstain from that or Allah will snatch away their sight.’”

Ibn Majah 1044

33. Avoid yawning while in the prayer

It is not good manner, and as well shaitan will laugh when you yawn.

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Yawning is from Satan and if anyone of you yawns, he should check his yawning as much as possible, for if anyone of you (during the act of yawning) should say: ‘Ha’, Satan will laugh at him.

Sahih al-Bukhari 3289

34. Avoid spitting on direction of Qibla

It is against the proper manner of Salat, as you are speaking to Allah.

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) saw some sputum in the direction of the Qiblah of the mosque. He turned to the people and said:

“What is wrong with one of you that he stands facing Him (meaning his Lord) and spits in front of Him? Would anyone like to be faced by someone who spits in his face? If anyone of you needs to spit, then let him spit to his left, or let him do like this in his garment.”

Ibn Majah 1022

35. Avoid putting your hands on the hip

Abu Hurairah narrated:

“The Prophet (S) prohibited that a man to pray with his hands on his hip.”

Jami` at-Tirmidhi 383

“I prayed beside Ibn Umar and put my hand on my waist, and he did this to me-knocked it with his hand. When I had finished praying I said to a man: ‘Who is this?’ He said: “Abdullah bin Umar.’ I said: ‘O Abu Abdur-Rahman, why are you angry with me?’ He said: ‘This is the posture of crucifixion, and the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) forbade us to do this.'”

Sunan an-Nasa’i 891

36. Avoid letting your lower clothing go below the ankles

Our Prophet peace be upon him prohibited us to do this.

Abu Hurairah said:

“The Messenger of Allah [SAW] said: ‘Whatever of the Izar comes below the ankles is in the Fire.'”

Sunan an-Nasa’i 5330

37. Avoid coming to the masjid with bad smell (resulted from eating onions, leek, or smoking)

It is offensive to the worshippers and could disturb their khushoo due to their bother of the bad-smelling. It also offends the angels.

Jabir b. ‘Abdullah reported the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) saying:

He who eats of this (offensive) plant, i. e garlic, and sometimes he said: He who eats onion and garlic and leek, should not approach our mosque for the angels are harmed by the same things as the children of Adam.

Sahih Muslim 564 c

38. Pray two rakats Tahyyiat prayer before sitting down

It can be any sunnah prayer including the two rakat Sunnah of Fajr.

Narrated Abu Qatada bin Rabi Al-Ansari;:

The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “If anyone of you enters a Mosque, he should not sit until he has offered a two Rakat prayer.”

Sahih al-Bukhari 1167

It is like a warmup for the Farz. It makes you prepared for better khushoo.

May Allah grant us full khushoo. We depend on Him, He is Independent Being and does not need us. We seek His help to achieve the joy found in Salat.

Birthday In Islam

A birthday is celebration which is celebrated when the person has reached his birth day. People often would give gifts, such as foods, watches, and sometimes expensive things, etc. The parties are held in home, office or schools

But can Muslims practice it?

We should look at how it started. Little research will be enough. According to this website

It all started with the Egyptians.

Scholars who study the Bible say that the earliest mention of a birthday was around 3,000 B.C.E. and was in reference to a Pharaoh’s birthday. But further study implies that this was not their birth into the world, but their “birth” as a god.

When Egyptian pharaohs were crowned in ancient Egypt, they were considered to have transformed into gods. This was a moment in their lives that became more important than even their physical birth.

Pagans, such as the ancient Greeks, believed that each person had a spirit that was present on the day of his or her birth. This spirit kept watch and had a mystic relation with the god on whose birthday that particular individual was born.

The Birthday candles was started by the Greeks.

Gods and goddesses were a huge part of Greek culture. Greeks offered many tributes and sacrifices to appease these gods. The lunar goddess, Artemis, was no different.

As a tribute to her, the Greeks would offer up moon-shaped cakes adorned with lit candles to recreate the glowing radiance of the moon and Artemis’ perceived beauty. The candles also symbolized the sending of a signal or prayer. Blowing out the candles with a wish is another way of sending that message to the gods.

Birthdays first started as a form of protection.

It is assumed that the Greeks adopted the Egyptian tradition of celebrating the “birth” of a god. They, like many other pagan cultures, thought that days of major change, such as these “birth” days, welcomed evil spirits. They lit candles in response to these spirits almost as if they represented a light in the darkness. This implies that birthday celebrations started as a form of protection.

In addition to candles, friends and family would gather around the birthday person and protect them from harm with good cheers, thoughts, and wishes. They would give gifts to bring even more good cheer that would ward off evil spirits. Noisemakers were also used to scare away the unwanted evil.

So what does Islam say about birthday?

These traditions mentioned above were all based on Shirks.

According to scholars, celebrating birthday is not permissible, because they imitate the Kafirs. and what they said is true, the roots of birthday as mentioned above, shows that it was actually the Kafirs who invented it for their false gods.

Even Muslims should not celebrate Christmas, because it is basically just pagan culture. The Bible does not even mention it either.

It is reported in hadith:

You would tread the same path as was trodden by those before you inch by inch and step by step so much so that if they had entered into the hole of the lizard, you would follow them in this also. We said: Allah’s Messenger, do you mean Jews and Christians (by your words)” those before you”? He said: Who else (than those two religious groups)?

Sahih Muslim 2669 a

What Prophet peace be upon him said has came true. We see that Muslims have took cultures from non muslims into their cultures. We should be proud of our religion, and we believe that it is the Truth, which Allah has guided us toward. Therefore there is no need to copy non muslims’ cultures.

ٱلۡيَوۡمَ أَكۡمَلۡتُ لَكُمۡ دِينَكُمۡ وَأَتۡمَمۡتُ عَلَيۡكُمۡ نِعۡمَتِى وَرَضِيتُ لَكُمُ ٱلۡإِسۡلَٰمَ دِينًاۚ

This day I have perfected for you your religion and compteled My favor upon you and have approved for you Islam as religion.
